Look at all those ghosts on SDSU's campus . . . "I see dead people".

It's not really a myth though. I visited in HS a few years ago and it really is the middle of nowhere. I remember the tour guide was all excited Storrs had just gotten its first movie theater or grocery store or something basic. It's a nice school for sure, but the town was severely underdeveloped when I visited.

Gainesville, FL and Charlottesville, VA are also small college towns. Storrs can be something like that. There's nothing wrong with a rural setting where everything is all about the school.

But you're right, Storrs needs more development. It looks like that is coming.

Tennessee BOR just approved a 750-room student living center to replace rundown dorms at the U of Memphis that was causing students to live off campus. It is expected to break ground next summer. The UM just opened a gorgeous state of the art student center a few years ago that has brought new life to the main campus.

CVille has 44K people and has a lot to offer culturally. Gainesville has nearly 125K people and does too, although I like Charlottesville a lot more.

I'm guessing some people here have never been to some of the SWAC locales like Prairie View, Grambling, and Alta Dena, MS. Now those are ghost towns.

The town has gotten better. It's a bit quaint, but I wouldn't call it nowheresville.

It could use more development, which is why I am thrilled about this.

Storrs will never be like Charlottesville or Gainesville...it just won't. Both of those cities are on major highways.

I was just down there. The new dorm looks more like a Fall 2013 opening.

RE: New College Town Emerges at UCONN
Even in big cities like Philadelphia, higher education has become a serious economic engine. I don't have the exact figures in front of me but I can tell you that 3 universities are definatly top 10 employers in the city. Factor in the other 100 or so colleges and it's easy to see how much of an impact they can have in an urban area. So in a small city it the local college may amount to 90% of the economic activity but even in a big city it may end up being a whopping 20% or so when you factor in all of the schools ..
