RE: How Aresco got hired
Good find. Here's an interesting line:
"Sources say Aresco was a latecomer to the interview process, not interviewing until about 30 days before his hiring."
30 days? Well, that kills McMurphy's theory that his records request made Aresco a "last-minute" switch. Aresco simply came into the picture after those other names were bandied about.
An issue I have with the author of this story (and many others) is the use of the term, "the Big East was gutted" by the loss of WVU, Pitt and Syracuse.
No, it wasn't "gutted." Boise replaces WVU in football, and BYU was better the past 10 years. UH, UCF and SMU certainly overcome the loss of Pitt and Syracuse in football. BE football is probably BETTER now, not "gutted," lol.
In basketball, the BE took a hit by losing Syracuse, but I wouldn't call that being "gutted," either. Memphis and Temple make up for WVU and Pitt in basketball, easily.
And the idea that it will be a "financial stretch" for the BE to get back to $130M a year seems funny, too, since we now have 12, and eventually 14 FB teams, not 9. The amount per school takes a slight hit, but if we don't get $130M a year total, something is wrong. It's going to be more than that, from most accounts.
As for Aresco not being a TV deal closer, that's not an issue, with Bevilacqua and EMC in the fold. The fact that he is more of a facilitator is actually a plus, long term, given the structure of the nBE.
Good, positive story. But we weren't "gutted," and the next TV contract should beat $130M a year, without being a "financial stretch."
