How Aresco got hired
Here's a good article on how Aresco got hired. Some interesting quotes were;

Getting back to that $130 million to $150 million level financially will stretch Aresco’s bargaining chops, although industry sources like the combination of nice-guy Aresco teaming with bulldog Bevilacqua. The Big East’s losses are considerable, so Aresco and Bevilacqua will have to lean on the conference’s broader footprint with Boise State and San Diego State, and the huge population centers where its schools are located.

While the conference in its announcement positioned Aresco as “instrumental in negotiating” CBS’s deal with Turner and the NCAA, as well as the extension with the SEC, industry sources said McManus clearly is the lead negotiator and dealmaker for the network. Aresco was the chief day-to-day contact for CBS with its college partners, primarily the SEC, NCAA and Navy, which enabled him to develop close ties with many of the key decision-makers, including SEC commissioner Mike Slive.

RE: How Aresco got hired
Good find. Here's an interesting line:

"Sources say Aresco was a latecomer to the interview process, not interviewing until about 30 days before his hiring."

30 days? Well, that kills McMurphy's theory that his records request made Aresco a "last-minute" switch. Aresco simply came into the picture after those other names were bandied about.

An issue I have with the author of this story (and many others) is the use of the term, "the Big East was gutted" by the loss of WVU, Pitt and Syracuse.

No, it wasn't "gutted." Boise replaces WVU in football, and BYU was better the past 10 years. UH, UCF and SMU certainly overcome the loss of Pitt and Syracuse in football. BE football is probably BETTER now, not "gutted," lol.

In basketball, the BE took a hit by losing Syracuse, but I wouldn't call that being "gutted," either. Memphis and Temple make up for WVU and Pitt in basketball, easily.

And the idea that it will be a "financial stretch" for the BE to get back to $130M a year seems funny, too, since we now have 12, and eventually 14 FB teams, not 9. The amount per school takes a slight hit, but if we don't get $130M a year total, something is wrong. It's going to be more than that, from most accounts.

As for Aresco not being a TV deal closer, that's not an issue, with Bevilacqua and EMC in the fold. The fact that he is more of a facilitator is actually a plus, long term, given the structure of the nBE.

Good, positive story. But we weren't "gutted," and the next TV contract should beat $130M a year, without being a "financial stretch."

I like the fact that he and SEC commissioner Mike Slive are buds. It could pay dividends. 07-coffee3

George Washington was a latecomer in the process of selecting a commanding general for the Continental Army. No-brainer decisions don't need a lot of time.

I've always liked Slive. He did a great job for C-USA, back in the day.

Yes'n'no. He showed up from day one in his Colonel's uniform from the French and Indian war, and said basically nothing.

Agreed. It was a very sad day for C-USA when he left and was replace by Banowsky. 03-banghead

Not being sarcastic (i don't really understand the process) but how does his relationship with Slive help the negotiations?

It won't.

It'll help us in the smoky back-rooms of the good old boys' meetings...

It helps the backroom deals to keep the Big East in the big boys club.

It appears the bleeding has stopped with this hire. Now it up to the negotiating team to what they do best and hopefully they can surprise like they did with the Pac 12 deal.

IF they pull off anything close to that, it would put our foot back in the door, at least. And Aresco being buddies with Slive doesn't hurt, and it might help a little.
