So far....
45. DePaul

35. Houston
29. Notre Dame
Georgetown, Louisville, UConn, and Memphis should be ranked. Cincinnati and Marquette are possible.
How the rankings work.

Possible? UC has a championship and 3 final 4's in the last 50 years. There is ZERO doubt they'll be ranked.

Possible? For UC I'd say more like probable.

I would be surprised if Temple doesn’t show up on this list, the Owls have been consistently good for a long time.

I don't think UC's championship counts. It starts from 1962-1963 season.

Even without the championships Cincinnati's basketball success over the last two decades should be more than enough to at the very least get into the Top 25.

UC has what, 6 final fours and two titles if you go back 54 years. The cutoff hurts their case. Still, 1 title and 3 final fours is pretty good. Plus, they have a ton of conference championships.
Marquette has an NCAA title, an NIT title when it still mattered and 3 final fours. It also ranks 11th all time in NCAA tourney appearances, with 90% of those appearances occurring in the past 50 years. The only thing holding MU back is a lack of conference championships, because MU wasn't in a league till the late 80s.
Of the schools you mention, Memphis has the weakest resume (although its is very strong). Also, I wouldn't forget Villanova.

RE: ESPN 50 in 50 series
UC has how many C-USA and Great Midwest regular season and tourney titles? How many NCAA appearances? Final fours, elite 8's, and sweet 16's? I don't foresee any issues. UC, historically, is considered a top 15 basketball program (and in many publications top 10). Those are all heavily weighted on the last 30-40 years...

Not sure how Murray State got ranked. Furthest they got is the third round in the tournament and that was last year.

Yes, but they won 22 conference titles (22x5) and 15 conference tourney titles (15x3). So of their 241 points that accounts for 165 of the points.

Murray State is a heck of a basketball program. They just win, that simple.

RE: ESPN 50 in 50 series
Btw, those who laughed b/c I personally ranked Memphis as "excellent" in a recent thread, the predecessor to this current ESPN ranking was done in 2007. I listed 14 teams as "excellent," and Memphis was #14 on ESPN's 2007 ranking, and that was before we made the NC game in 2008, made the S16 in 2009, plus 2 more NCAA appearances after that. And yes, they count vacated seasons, lol. At least, they did the last time.
Will be interesting to see where Memphis stands now. Should still be at least close to #14, I'm guessing.

Do they take conference strength into consideration? I mean winning the MVC is not exactly the same as winning the Big East in basketball.

ESPN all-time Sagarin rankings. Of course, there is a tremendous bias towards teams in power conferences.

RE: ESPN 50 in 50 series
Reading this made me curious so I checked Temples basketball stats.
Not going into season by season details for wins and losses I found the following:
Since 1962 – 63
27 NCAA tournament appearances
5 Elite 8
5 Sweet 16
10 Regular season conference championships
9 Conference tournament championships
I would think this is good enough to get in? Maybe not?

Link to that one. Memphis didn't have a very good 60's.
Arkansas comes in at 25 now. They were 15th in that particular ranking.

RE: ESPN 50 in 50 series
All the criteria are listed in the OP link. Too much to list. I notice they have changed the rankings formula since last time, and are going further back in time. They also are taking points away for NCAA infractions this time. Didn't read it closely enough to ferret out if SOS is a factor. They did add win percentages in.

1960s, the era of More Iba at Memphis. That's why I used 1985 to present in my rankings, lol. But we were really good in the 1950s and 1970s, too. The 1960s were a down period, as were the late 90s, to some extent.

Ironically. that was a decade when we had an excellent football program (which did not get the recognition that it deserved due to being a relative newcomer to the major ranks).
