Hmmmm.....

I think I'd blow a gasket if we invite ECU or Southern Miss. In fact I really don't want another full member at all - it just dilutes the payout value for each team unnecessarily.

Sure BYU would be great, but why would they get a full invite nod over BSU? Not feeling it....

Either way, it had better be either AF, BYU, or Fresno or I think some people are going to be pissed, myself included...

Ive always thought BYU made huge sense as a football only---that way there are no issues with Sunday play. Please do NOT tell me they are not considering UNLV.....

Honestly, I think he just mis-spoke. Another full member doesnt really make sense. BYU as a football only makes a ton of sense. My money is still on that being the way this plays out.

BYU is by far the best choice out there with Air Force at number two. No other schools have national fan bases and also located out west. I still believe UMass would be logical all sports member. ECU as a football only could work but they need a home for their other sports, maybe the A-10. I wouldn't take the Pirates for all sports yet but would considered it down the road.

Fresno State if they can mantain a solid football program would be worth a look, I worry what the coaching change will bring.

He didn't say ALL-Sports

The actual quote was as follows:

"and there will be another one at some point that will play basketball and football."

He didn't say that the 14th school would play football and basketball.

He said starting at 47:21:

Quote:By next year, we'll have 13 teams and we'll eventually be likely to add a 14th. We're definitely going to play a championship game in roughly 16 months beginning next season.

And then this at 48:20:

Quote:It will have 8 basketball-only schools, it will have 3 football-only schools once Navy comes aboard, and the other 11 or so will play, and there will be another one at some point, will play basketball and football

Easily a misspeak given the stream of consciousness from a live interview. It *could* mean another all-sports school, or it *could* mean that there is another school to be added somewhere, but he didn't break it down as to what that school would be playing.

Personally, I don't see 19 hoops schools working. 18 is pushing it and if they're going to add more, go to 20.

FB Only - Boise, SDSU, Navy
BB Only - Georgetown, Seton Hall, St. Johns, Providence, Marquette, Notre Dame, DePaul, Villanova
Both - UCF, USF, Houston, SMU, Memphis, Louisville, Cincinnati, Temple, UConn, Rutgers

That's 3, 8, and 10. With one more school to come aboard.

But the statement about 13 teams next year is also indicative of a misspeak, as is the "other 11 or so...and there will be another one...". So take it FWIW.

19 teams is easier than 20 because you play everybody once, the only issue with an odd number of teams is that somebody has to a weekend off from a conference game. I big non-conference game could be a place holder that weekend or a team could have the weekend and play on the road for Big Monday while the host team plays on Friday or Saturday.

Here is the full quote, in a little more context, word for word:

"It will have obviously 8 basketball only schools, it will have 3 football schools, uh, football only schools, once, uh, Navy comes aboard, and then the rest, the other 11 or so, will play, and there will be another one at some point, will play basketball and football."

As TOGC and I have beaten into the ground on the Memphis board, TOGC thinks it means #14 will be all sports. You certainly could interpret it that way.

But I think he just added up the teams in his head, in a stream of consciousness, and that he has not given a minute's thought to who #14 will be.

He is less than a week into being commissioner-elect, and he has already said Job 1 is the TV contract, and Job 1A is the BCS bowl and playoff system. He also said we will likely invite #14 within the next year.

In that context, I doubt he has made any hard and fast decision about #14 being all sports, FB only, or what.

I listened to it again. He was just trying to tie everything together in regard to the different types of members in the Big East and how many of each there were. The reference that there would be another school added was just thrown in there because I think he had forgotten to mention that. I dont believe it was his intent to classify the added schools membership type---he just crammed the aside into the sentence in such a way that it is possible to get that meaning....but I seriously doubt that was his intent.

I prefaced it with "he may have misspoke."

But the way he said it does imply that IF a fourteenth member is added, it will be for both FB and BB.

Exactly. He has mushed up a few other comments, too, but he does damn good at getting out almost all of his talking points, especially considering what we have had up until now. Vernon even complimented him on that.

I just don't think #14 has risen that high on his agenda yet. It certainly shouldn't have.

Right. I think the only "news" in the comment may be that the timeline for adding another team might be sometime in 2013 rather than 2014....which is what I thought you were referring to earlier when I didnt catch the all-sports part of your post...

Espn was saying that with the WAC dropping Football, only New Mexico St is left without a Home. I don't know But What if for 2013 ? easy grab with FB and BB. Not My choice, but could slide in to the West. Anyone else see it happening ?

If they had any value at all the MW, CUSA, and Sunbelt would be all be courting them.
