Why would he annouce before the season starts? Seems it would kill morale and recruiting not knowing who the next coach is. I guess it would give the school time to find a replacement but not the way I'd do it if true.

This is probably better on recruiting. Otherwise he recruits all year and then suddenly tells recruits he's retiring. Its a lot better to tell them up front, and then let the assistants work on keep them solid during the year.

Howard did this as well. He was in the last year of his contract.

We went 1-11, so I have no idea how GSU players will react.

This is new. A while back, he did say that he wasn't going to make a decision about a contract extension until the current contract expired. That might be what you're thinking about.

Everyone has known this was coming for 8 to 12 months. If I knew then the players knew

This isn't intended as smack, but if State goes 1-11 this year, it won't be because Curry announced his retirement.

I don't think him retiring is a shock to anyone.

I actually thought that Howard retiring would of sparked a fire in the coachs and players to send him off with a bang.

Instead it went the other way with the coachs going into passive mode because they were unsure of thier jobs and the players responding to that attitude by being slackers too.

That would be the concern, that the asst coachs realize they are probably gone and go into Job Search mode.

Paul Johnson told our players he was leaving for Navy right before a semi final game. Many blame that for the reason we didn't win that day.

It's hard to get fired up knowing things are about to change. I see the "send me out with a bang" thought process, but it rarely seems to work out that way.

The Currys own a beautiful home in the mountains of western North Carolina and they want to spend more time there without the stress of coaching a start-up program. He did his job at GSU in establishing their football program and he did it well, plus he doesn't need the money. Good luck to Coach Curry.

Agree.

And it's a fresh FBS start for GSU as well. They will struggle because of the shift to FBS and a new Coach but it wont take long to catch up to the pack. See WKU last year as an example.

i never thought curry was a great coach tbh.

i do think he would have been a good guy to start a program up and do it cleanly and get things rolling. very intelligent guy with good morals but was never impressed with him when he was with the big blue.

he did what was asked of him. now do what all of us mid schools try to do....make a good hire.

Kentucky is a grease fire. The last coach to leave with a winning record? Bear Bryant.

It's sad that we (GaSo fans) have to preface all our posts with this, but:

This is not intended as smack.

GSU won't be getting any GT assistants because their fan base might riot if they implemented the TO.

Coordinator-level UGA coaches are going to cost too much, so you're looking at position level coaches. That's not to say that a position coach can't be a head coach. Our own Jeff Monken was a position coach before leading us to back-to-back semifinals. But I don't know that I would gamble this make-or-break decision on an offensive line coach. This is pretty much true of all BCS level schools.

That leaves coordinators at non-BCS level schools and FCS head coaches, and that can be a total crap-shoot.

This is absolutely the most important hire for Ga State for the next 10 years. A poor hire along with the FBS transition is going to reinforce the "losing is OK" mindset, and that's just not what you need with a startup program. If Ga State can get a solid up-and-coming coach that instills the winning attitude, they will be a force to be reckoned with.

Personally, I'd like to recommend Brian Van Gorder. :)
