No need to hire a tv guy....you just hired a firm to handle this. Another bad move.....Good move in hiring TV consultatns, then took a back step or 6 with this hire IMO....
I completely disagree. It didn't HAVE to be a TV guy, b/c we have the negotiations covered by the very best now, but that doesn't mean it should NOT be one, either.

The key is to hire somebody who has high level successful executive experience. Aresco seems to fit the bill.

Compare him to Tranghese or Marinatto. Surely you can see the difference. Nobody knows if this guy will be successful, only time will tell, but he certainly has the resume you would look for in hiring a new commish.

Very solid hire.

Just because they hired guys with TV backgrounds to negotiate doesn't mean Aresco isn't worth it. Guy headed up a dept that has NFL, PGA, SEC, NCAA Tournament and major tennis events. Its about his organizational skills too.

Not to be a debbie downer here, but CBS hasn't exactly been the Big East's friend, either. See Dennis Dodd, Brett McMurphy (until this month), Gary Parrish, etc.
That means nothing. Simply a negotiating tactic.

I'm not sure I would put a CBS executive in the same niche as a blogger/commentator.

Why would Dodd be talking to Neinas about this so quickly?

You've hired a well respected tv consulting firm to handle the tv deal....now go find a "governor" or AD to run the conference using the tv consulting firm as a resource...not go out and hire yet another tv guy....

Big 12, waiting for your call.

I agree. Working with the media has turned into the most important job requirement for any conference commissioner, so I think this was a good hire on paper for the Big East. Having media experience is much more important than having college administrative experience, IMHO.

Probably didn't, it was a canned quote that would have been the same regardless who the hire was.

Parrish's take:

Says it's a great pick. Gives it an A-. Says the only negative is that his law degree is from UConn. 03-lmfao

So, it appears that Neinas thinks it was a great hire for the Big East. I'm not sure if that means anything other than it's nice to get a stamp of approval from someone that is clearly respected in college sports circles (even if he wasn't exactly nice to the Big East previously).

I totally get the difference between a network executive and a commentator, but both Dodd and McMurphy have been touting BE TV numbers in the very shallow end of the pool. They get their numbers from somewhere, and I think it's pretty logical to believe that they could get those numbers from Aresco or someone who works for him.

Maybe someone could talk me down here, but I'm not as high on the BE TV deal with a CBS exec as commish. He's accomplished a ton for sure, but all on the other side. How will his loyalties play in negotiations?

Bilas was not our guy first of all, we were laughing at Pitino for it too.

You newcomers are just so thrilled to be in the Big East, they could tell you Big Bird was being hired and you would applause and say I'm on board with this.

Meanwhile those of us with a head on our shoulders may have a difference of opinion.

I agree. The guy has all the right experience. Successful, high-level exec in a successful, high-profile company. Sports experience. Media negotiation experience. Law degree. Lots of connections. Big East ties.

What's not to like? I repeat, go find Tranghese's or Marinatto's resume, and compare. Night and day. Time will tell, but on the surface, we got the right guy.

There is nothing wrong with stockpiling your roster full of media guys on the cusp of hitting the open market for a media deal that will by-and-large make or break this conference.

Those of you complaining about needing someone with a background in sports administration are fools. We just had an interim commissioner and a former commissioner with those credentials. How did that work out for us?

In this day and age, a person familiar with building strong college brand in the media is very important. This guy is an alumnus of a Big East school, and has legal experience at the highest level in contract negotiation for college sports. You guys needs to think a bit harder about this one before you go up in arms.

Actually, many of us have said it might take 6 months (or even longer) to decide if the new Big East commish is off to a good start...its YOU that was whining like a baby about his hiring before the dude even worked a day in his new position.

It seems that the Big East is following a bit in the Pac-10's footsteps when they thought "out-of-the-box" in their hiring of Larry Scott...as its painfully obvious to all that TV CONTRACTS are the most important aspect to a conf today...vs hiring the next bff from the local catholic school.
