We'll be playing our first year of football with a team made from plenty of FCS recruits and 50% walk-ons. Please, tell me who we should have scheduled instead.

I'm just saying you should WIN. Not who you scheduled.

I see about seven-eight wins on that schedule.
Is that too hopeful? I really dont follow FCS that much, plus don't really know how good we will be.

We can't really say how well Charlotte will do. They literally have NO football history.

Good luck, 49ers! Let's see how you do! 04-cheers

It's pretty cool that you're playing ODU. They're probably going to curb stomp you though.

RE: So 49rs you better win some with this weak schedule
For a first year schedule it looks good to me as well. I am not sure I see 7 or 8 wins however. The road schedule is going to be tough with ODU and Coastal pretty much a loss; all those teams are established programs. At home, GWU will be a tough win as well and they have a number of successful years under their belt as a program. I do not know much as about Chowan but I believe they where a good junior college program so eventhough they may be newer to FCS they are not a new program. Campell and UNCP I think are the best shots at sure wins if there is such a thing. I hope Charlotte comes out of the gate really strong and wins a lot of games but it may not happen since this is a fairly strong schedule for a first year team. Good luck Niners.

LOL I have heard of ODU and Presbyterian. The rest of that list no idea who they are. You should win no less than 6 in that list. ODU will probably stomp you though, unfortunately for you.

You should expect the unexpected from a first year team. I know from experience lol. I haven't looked at your schedule yet, but some games that you might think might be a cakewalk, might become your hardest ones.

RE: So 49rs you better win some with this weak schedule
That actually looks pretty tough for a first year schedule if you compare it to South Alabama or UTSA's debut slates.

South Alabama played schools like Pikeville and Missouri S&T in their first full slate and was able to go 10-0 (and the previous season they played a 7-game slate against teams like Hargrave Military Academy and Louisburg JC.

UTSA went 4-6, defeating Northeastern State, Bacone, Georgia State and Minot State while dropping games to McMurry, Southern Utah, Sam Houston State, South Alabama, UC Davis, and McNeese State.

Interestingly enough, UTSA went into overtime vs both South Alabama and Georgia State, so I'd say all three of those startups are pretty close entering the 2012 season.

Anywho, I know Charlotte does not have the luxury of being able to take it as slowly as South Alabama did, but I'd say the 49ers are in for a pretty rough first season.

RE: So 49rs you better win some with this weak schedule
Old Marshall fans understand what it's like to play all freshmen with only a handful of upper clansmen. If you played a MAC or Sunbelt schedule, you could expect several 1 and 2-win seasons. Even with an A Sun schedule you probably can't expect to have a winning season.

I don't see a winnable away game and in 3 you could get beat pretty badly. Campbell and Garner Webb will be real tests at home. 5-7 would be favorable results imo. If you see a winning record, you will probably lose your coach in year 2 because of his skills.

Fans need to keep low expectations for the early years to keep from becoming disappointed. Problem is, when you finally gain some experience, you will be carrying a much more difficult schedule. Feel proud you made such a fast jump but keep in mind there's a long road ahead of you.

RE: So 49rs you better win some with this weak schedule
In UTSA's defense Sam Houston St made it to the FCS Championships and are very very good.

That schedule is similar to our first schedule in 2009. In 2010 we played Gardner Webb. The bold were our losses.

Sept. 5 - Chowan
Sept. 12 - Virginia Union
Sept. 19 - @ Jacksonville
Sept. 26 - Monmouth
Oct. 3 - Fordham

Oct. 10 - Presbyterian
Oct. 17 - Campbell
Oct. 24 - @ Savannah State
Oct. 31 - Georgetown
Nov. 7 - NC Central
Nov. 14 - @ Iona
Nov. 21 - @ VMI

Never too soon to develop a culture of winning. A lot of new programs are tempted to schedule a lot of money making curb stomping road games with the big boys but I think the Boise St. model of a start up is the way to go. Start winning early and often and then start to filter in some winnable name programs instead of just looking to cash a check and have the fans thump their chest because a big name school is on the schedule that promptly gives you a public butt raping.

Not true. We had a team in the 40's, but only for two years.

Managed expectations is the key to success. Start slow and build a culture of success and it becomes contagious. Start too aggressively and you become Georgia State.

McMurry takes football pretty seriously for a program at that level. It's has turned into retread U over the last few years. Hal Mumme was hired as HC about 5 years ago and has had a few recognizable names pass through the staff. I think that the only one left that any of us would recognize is DC Joe Lee Dunn who has been at a myriad of southern schools and was an interim HC at OM for a season.

+1

I assume you've seen UTSA's 2013 OOC schedule? Then add C-USA schedule. We are, at best, looking at a 2-10 season.

I don't get the logic behind this philosophy. We are too young and our fanbase is too brittle to support a weekly stomping of 50+ points.

Ugh. That could end up being a pretty competitive schedule. It's possible that only 2 wins come from it.

One thing that should help us out is the fact that we know we're going FBS.

That could help us land some FBS transfers.

Our first class was mostly FCS level players. I think we got 1 or 2 guys in our first class with FBS offers, so we'll need to step it up this year if we want to win our first two seasons.
