Request for Memphis history buffs re: River and civil war ships
I understand that the river level is very low right now and going lower.

Does anyone know if the CSS General Beauregard is or will be exposed?

I don't know the answer, but I do wonder how much might be left. It's probably scattered for miles downstream if there is anything.

What about the SS Sultana? Went down near Memphis and is the greatest naval disaster in United States history.

Were any of those visible the last time the river was so low?

The Sultana is said to be somewhere in Arkansas, the river has shifted since then and the ship is buried somewhere, and there are no accurate records about exactly where it went down.

The location of the Sultana wreck is known. It is buried under about 20 feet of silt in what is now a bean field, inside the levy, about two miles west of the current river stream.

The timbers of the CSS Beauregard could be seen during a low river level some years ago.

RE: Request for Memphis history buffs re: River and civil war ships
There are more than just the Beauregard. There are actually about 3 or 4 ships that could be seen once exposed, iirc. The battle occurred almost directly in front of Memphis, although most of the ships that sunk were on the Arkansas side. I've seen in random history books the positions of the boats, and I am sorry to say that I can't remember the exact sources nor do I remember the exact locations, but I can tell you from memory that they should be just north of the Harahan nearer the Arkansas side than Memphis. If you end up exploring in that area, be sure to stop in the large cotton field north of the Harahan on the Arkansas side, those are the old Memphis dueling grounds (dueling was illegal in Tennessee but legal in Arkansas). Andrew Jackson killed a man there.

Take Dacus Lake Road north and you should be able to see a historical placard standing in the middle of the field.

Thanks, I did not know that.

I would not want to see General Beauregard exposed.

I knew I had exchanged PMs with someone on here about this - it must have been you.

I would enjoy a Saturday jaunt to the dueling grounds.

North of the Harahan, would that be viewable from the metal works museum?

(cool info on the dueling ground)

RE: Request for Memphis history buffs re: River and civil war ships
and the history of the town that no longer exists, Hopefield, AR...

http://encyclopediaofarkansas.net/encycl...tryID=5602

The town was eradicated by a severe flood in 1912. After this flood, all railroad freight was transferred over the Frisco Bridge, and the opening of the Harahan Bridge in 1916 eliminated demand for ferry services altogether. Consequently, Hopefield remained abandoned. Today, the supporting piers of the Interstate 40 bridge rest atop the old location of Hopefield. Several historical markers placed by a Boy Scout troop once detailed significant events and locations in town history, but years of neglect took their toll, and the markers no longer remain. Some building foundations and the railroad embankment partially remain, and at times when the Mississippi is low, the submerged vessels then visible attest to the traffic that once flowed through the town. Ox-bow Hopefield Chute (also called Dacus Lake) and Hopefield Lake just to its south are the only other extant reminders of the community long ago inundated by the river.

Here is a map that gives the location of the ships and Hopefield.

Not sure. I've never seen them myself, nor have I been to the metal museum. All of my info comes from local history books that I read a few years ago. Sorry I couldn't help, but my local history has been replaced by my current studies.

There are many, many areas that I would like to explore in Memphis, I am sure TigerBill and alterego2 would like some of the places that I have heard and read about over the years. Depending on how busy my schedule is this fall, I may put together some detailed guides on some areas and send them out to anyone who would want to explore them on their own time.

There should be an expedition to raise the Sultana, it would make a good History Channel show. All I know about it , was that it was thought to be close or in Arkansas' waters.

I would love that. And I bet Jimmy Ogle, the Memphis historian, could show us some spots. He asked me last year if I wanted to check out the Sultana spot.
