If the WAC dies at 50 that isn't so bad....

That is longer than Michael Jackson lived. He only made it to 49.

Makes sense. Even if invites went out today, teams still couldn't start transition until 2013 and most would have to pay extra to leave their current league early.

Yeesh - that has to be the most depressing "State of the Conference" speech ever.

WAC says it has not extended invitations to any schools.

Hurd: Not counting on Boise State for 2013-14. Boise State told WAC intention was to pursue Big West membership.

So unless something big changes, they're looking at

4 schools for 2013-14 (all of whom are probably making looking for a new conference their top priority)

No help from Big Sky and not enough D-I indys west of the Mississippi to fill out a D-I conference that complies with NCAA requirements

Last faint hope is that they can find at least 6 (!) FCS schools to move to FBS and join WAC all at once, and that WAC gets waivers to last until those schools are full-fledged FBS.

RE: No football for wac in 2013
Reading into the comments it sounds like there is not a lot of optimism that they'll be able to pull off anything to stay intact either in football or Olympic sports.

The only thing the WAC has going for it is it has in Denver, Seattle, Idaho and NMSU a group of quality academic universities. Why couldn't they attract the Montana schools along with UND and Portland State for basketball while those schools play football in the Great West?

Or could the WAC use its upgrade power to move up Montana, Montana State, North Dakota for a 5 team FBS conference to handle November scheduling while leaving it up to everyone to schedule September/October on their own. Then at 5 schools the WAC can push for that waiver to extend the sunset of FBS out another 2 seasons..

You could try to make an eastern seaboard league of

App State
Georgia Southern
Jacksonville State
James Madison
Liberty

All of those want to move up I believe. Delaware might be convinced to move too by James madison.

That is not accurate. The WAC needs 6 members that play baseball. They do not need 6 members that play soccer. They can sponsor soccer and use affiliates to reach the minimum required. I asked the question to Jeff Hurd, and he informed me they can use affiliates for the 3rd mens team sport.

Baseball would be
Seattle
NMSU
UVU
CSUB
UTPA
GCU (could get a waiver to count a transition school)
or someone could add baseball, this could be subsidized with entry fee money from the schools that are leaving after one year.

I don't think its even permissible to move up more than 4 schools at one time because of the requirement that a school must play 60 percent of its competition against established D1.

An alternative would be to move up 4 schools and get back to 8 in basketball then press for a waiver by the NCAA for a couple more years before expanding again. The WAC probably has the power to bring up 4 with the idea they would be joining to upgrade basketball.

GCU is not D-I. They are not "in transition to D-I." They are D-II, period. When you are relying on a school that once, sometime in the past, said, "We might want to move to D-I someday," that just emphasizes that the survival of the WAC now depends on scenarios for stitching together a zombie conference, scenarios that are fantasy or near-fantasy.

There was an article out of Phoenix a month or two ago that GCU wanted in the WAC, and had spoken to the WAC. It isn't some fantasy scenario. They are D2 right now because they have no choice until they are invited. The Summit would not be in compliance next year if UNO was not joining, which is why they were invited once SUU announced they were leaving.

Of course the WAC is desperate. But the alignment I laid out is not fantastic at all. At this point it, or something like it, is probable, not a fantasy scenario.

If I have time I'll dig it up later, otherwise you can scroll through the threads on the CFN site to find it instead of me doing it for you. RedHawk Robert a Seattle fan on the WAC board posted it a month or two ago.

Doesn't matter. D2 to D1 takes 3 years with no transition year. So for GCU to move up if invited today, wouldn't count towards WAC composition until 2016.

Then why is UN Omaha counting for baseball for the Summit next year?

RE: No football for wac in 2013
I think the WAC can survive as an Olympic conference by just by holding on to who they have and gobbling up the Great West, probably leaving New Jersey Institute of Technology out in the cold. They'd have 6 mens and 6 women's sports. I put this together a while ago, based on the WAC website's Directors' Cup grid, which shows who plays what, and from the Great West website.

Seattle, Denver, Boise State, Idaho, NMSU, CSU-Bakersfield, Utah Valley, UT Pan American, Chicago State

Mens
Basketball--All 9
Baseball--NMSU, Seattle, CSU-B, UVU, UTPA, Chicago State (6)
Cross Country--Idaho, NMSU, Seattle, UVU, UTPA, Chicago State (6)
Indoor track--Idaho, Boise State, Seattle, UTPA, UVU, Chicago State (6)
Outdoor Track--Idaho, Boise State, Seattle, UVU, UTPA, CSU-B, Chicago State (7)
Golf--Idaho, Denver, Seattle, NMSU, UVU, UTPA, Chicago State, CSU-B (8)

Women's
Basketball--All 9
Soccer--Idaho, Denver, NMSU, Boise, Seattle, UVU (6)
Volleyball--Idaho, Boise, NMSU, Seattle, Denver, UVU, Chicago State, UTPA (8)
Indoor Track--Idaho, NMSU, Seattle, UVU, UTPA, Chicago STate (6)
Outdoor TRack--Idaho, NMSU, Seattle, UVU, UTPA, CSU-B (6)
Tennis--Idaho, Denver, NMSU, Seattle, UVU, UTPA, Chicago State (7)

5 teams each
Men's Tennis--Idaho, Boise State, Denver, Seattle, NMSU
Women's Swimming & Diving--Idaho, Boise State, Denver, Seattle, NMSU

Now, this requires that the WAC hold on to Boise State, Idaho and NMSU, all of which are serious flight risks. I think I'd require everyone to field teams in men's and women's cross country and indoor and outdoor track, and two other men's and two other women's sports, so that one defection doesn't shut down three or four league sports and threaten the conference.
