RE: No football for wac in 2013
I think the WAC can survive as an Olympic conference by just by holding on to who they have and gobbling up the Great West, probably leaving New Jersey Institute of Technology out in the cold. They'd have 6 mens and 6 women's sports. I put this together a while ago, based on the WAC website's Directors' Cup grid, which shows who plays what, and from the Great West website.
Seattle, Denver, Boise State, Idaho, NMSU, CSU-Bakersfield, Utah Valley, UT Pan American, Chicago State
Mens
Basketball--All 9
Baseball--NMSU, Seattle, CSU-B, UVU, UTPA, Chicago State (6)
Cross Country--Idaho, NMSU, Seattle, UVU, UTPA, Chicago State (6)
Indoor track--Idaho, Boise State, Seattle, UTPA, UVU, Chicago State (6)
Outdoor Track--Idaho, Boise State, Seattle, UVU, UTPA, CSU-B, Chicago State (7)
Golf--Idaho, Denver, Seattle, NMSU, UVU, UTPA, Chicago State, CSU-B (8)
Women's
Basketball--All 9
Soccer--Idaho, Denver, NMSU, Boise, Seattle, UVU (6)
Volleyball--Idaho, Boise, NMSU, Seattle, Denver, UVU, Chicago State, UTPA (8)
Indoor Track--Idaho, NMSU, Seattle, UVU, UTPA, Chicago STate (6)
Outdoor TRack--Idaho, NMSU, Seattle, UVU, UTPA, CSU-B (6)
Tennis--Idaho, Denver, NMSU, Seattle, UVU, UTPA, Chicago State (7)
5 teams each
Men's Tennis--Idaho, Boise State, Denver, Seattle, NMSU
Women's Swimming & Diving--Idaho, Boise State, Denver, Seattle, NMSU
Now, this requires that the WAC hold on to Boise State, Idaho and NMSU, all of which are serious flight risks. I think I'd require everyone to field teams in men's and women's cross country and indoor and outdoor track, and two other men's and two other women's sports, so that one defection doesn't shut down three or four league sports and threaten the conference.
