Penn State would become more like a MAC school in terms of talent for a few years as they lose the elite talent. They would be a lot like Army, Navy, Northwestern, Vanderbilt in terms of talent. Players going there would have to do it for academics and a chance to play right away.

The low numbers basically mean you can't make any mistakes on kids. Not a good situation for a first time head coach coming from the pros.

Don't agree, USC lost like 10 scholarships and banned from bowls for 4 seasons and they have hardly skipped a beat.

The loss of the 10 annual scholarships begins in 2013.

here is what the other poster refers:

"Penn State will pay a $60 million fine, is banned from postseason play including bowl games for four years and will vacate its 112 wins from 1998-2011. The team also will lose 10 initial scholarships — given to first-year NCAA athletes — for four years beginning in 2013-14 and will drop its total number of scholarships from 85 to 65 for four years beginning in 2014-15. The university was put on five years' probation."

Assume that PSU had 85 players on scholarship yesterday.

It would take a while for attrition for the number to decrease to 65.

Remember PSU can give 15 new LOI scholarships per year.

PSU will have graduations and transfers each year suggesting maybe 25 might leave the program each of the first couple years and 15 enter the program on scholarship each year.

This will naturally bring down the scholarship count from 85 --> 65.

BTW, PSU should be a real world, lab exercise in 'what if' thinking.

Will PSU's FB program be described as "last one out, turn off the lights" as defections mount? (the idea that once defections start the snowball effect begins and more and more defect).

Or the 'domino theory' - the '12 recruiting class starts to fall, then some returning players transfers, then the '13 recruiting class has recruits decommit, etc.

USC was only banned from post-season play for '10,'11. They were given the option of having their scholarship reduction when they wanted, and they chose to start in 2012. So they played with 85 rides the last 2 seasons. During that time they piled up classes of kids who knew they would get to a bowl later in their playing careers and will go with a talented team with 75 rides this year and next.

PSU got it much worse.

And Penn State was only a middling B1G program to begin with.....they are hardly on the level of USC anymore.

thanks for the clarification. we still won't see any effect from lost scholarships on 9/1.

No but you may get a few current players to leave the program before then.

Honestly before this I thought you guys would win. If few key guys leave I now feel like they are going to clobber you.

what is it that made you change your mind so drastically? is it the "us against the world" mentality that PSU might (and probably will) come out with? i can see that as emotion does play a big part in football, certainly. i don't know if they would clobber us, but then again, if we're not ready for them to come out breathing fire, they just might. hopefully our guys will match their intensity, but the PSU players will have the backing of 108,000 people. that will help them a lot, i'm sure. either way, i can't wait for September 1!!!! actually, i can't wait for August 30 for the first night's games!

PS-At least the Ohio guys will have the backing of the Marching 110! hopefully that will mean something for us! :)

Ya that's pretty much it.

You guys do have the best band in the conference...though I don't see what that has to do with your football team.

the two are closely inter-related in that they both strongly support each other. it'll just be nice for the team to know the band is there. some support for them on the road, that's all!

Temple took Penn State down to the last seconds before losing to them last year. OU was a little better than Temple. If a few Penn State starters leave, that could give the edge to OU.
