Question to Akron fans Happy News!
I am going to Akron to work for the City of Akron! I would definitely cheer and go to some of your games when WMU is playing at a different time and cheer for them like any other MAC school. Want to learn somethings about your town.
Morley Health Center Auditorium
Where is it? Is there parking nearby? How much does parking cost? Anything I should know going into the building?
What should I know about your town? Is there a major rich family in your community? Is there a major employer outside of the University of Akron?
Thank you. Hopefully I get hired and see you in Akron.

RE: Question to Akron fans Happy News!
1. Morley Health Center is right next to the Quaker Square dorm on Broadway, in downtown Akron. It has its own 1-or-2 level parking deck, and I don't think that it's too expensive. I couldn't tell you much about the building. My only experience of it comes from gradeschool, as every student who attends a City of Akron school has to go there for immunization records or something.
Asking if there's a "major rich family" is an odd question and I'm not sure how to answer that. Akron isn't exactly a small town. Not a major city, but not a small town. Goodyear is headquartered there, and I'm sure the execs are very wealthy. Same goes for FirstEnergy and Firstmerit bank. Lots of major employers. Aside from the four mentioned, I think the biggest would be Lockheed Martin, Gojo, and Sterling Jewelers.

Thank you!
Size wise kinda what I think. Typical college town size maybe a little bigger probably an Ann Arbor comparison to Michigan and seems like about the same distance from a big city in Cleveland. Just looked it up bigger than Ann Arbor by a lot but not in the huge city category either. Very interesting.

Sounds like a very stable city with a lot of great things going for them. Many industries in the city also help in a recession. Being from Michigan and seeing Detroit I can tell you that alone is more industries than Detroit has to survive a downturn.

Akron is slightly larger than Grand Rapids, if that helps.
In fact, think of Akron as if you placed Grand Rapids about 40 miles outside of Detroit. The resulting mess of a metro/suburban area that would spring up in-between and surrounding it gives you somewhat of an idea of the area. Lots of suburbs surrounding three very close urban cores (the third being Canton [think an oversized Saginaw]).

Akron has 199k people.
The greater Akron area, which includes Cleveland, Akron and Elyria has 2.7 mill.
Grand Rapids has 774k....and that does not include the surrounding areas which bumps it to 1.3 mill.
Akron is not slightly bigger than Grand Rapids.

Hey EA3.......check your data......
2010 US Census data
City population:
Akron 199,110
Grand Rapids 188,040
Metro Population
Akron MSA 703,220
Grand Rapids MSA 774,361
Let's call it a tie!

I'm fine with whatever you want, it's a trivial matter.
But going back to my point, those two cities have little in common and I certainly wouldn't use Grand rapids as an example when describing Akron. They aren't comparable.

Yes, I know being from Mt. Pee there isn't much to show off other than Oklahoma City bomber. Wondering if there was any comparisons to the Striker's or the Upjohn's in Akron. It is one thing to look up information from a city it is another to look up it is another to talk to people who have spent time in Akron to learn something about the town. This is real interest I have received for a job in the Akron community.
I will be supportive of University of Akron like all MAC schools including CMU(which I take lots of heat for when I was cheering when you beat MSU a few years back) only time I won't is when WMU my alma mater is in town if WMU plays a game at a different time I will go to some games too and come back and watch WMU on my TV plug the internet feed into my TV and cheer on my Broncos when I can't drive back to Kzoo for a game.
I will be leaving a new post for further discussion.

RE: Question to Akron fans Happy News!
I do see how Akron is similar size wise to Grand Rapids but a little bigger. It seems like Akron is to Cleveland what Grand Rapids would be like if it was in the area of Ann Arbor.
Thank you for the information!

I was referring to the size of the city. There is a huge difference for example being a college town. Goodyear Headquarters. At the same time you can look at to solve problems Akron faces. To plan using a Kalamazoo or an Ann Arbor as examples of how they solved problems would be different because of how big Akron is by comparison.

I understand what you are trying to do.
And again, Grand Rapids and Akron are not comparable.
I would not look to Grand Rapids as a model to help solve Akron's problems.
