If say... CUSA breaks apart, are we the next Idaho?
I was reading one of the threads on the CUSA board...
http://csnbbs.com/showthread.php?tid=578423
and it got me thinking about the stability of our conference.

As we all have seen, the current members are not happy with us joining. I understand that it's just a few posters here, but it makes you wonder if that represents the common sentiment of their entire fanbase. Now, I laugh when I read derogatory remarks from El Paso and North Texas, as they are hardly in a position to criticize any athletic program. But people from ECU, Southern Piss and Marshall join in too, and I take them more seriously.

I understand the above linked thread is highly speculative, but if it did play out like that, and the top of CUSA joined the top of MWC in a new conference, where does that leave us? CUSA would be hurting without the flagship programs and the dreams of the Slumbelt would come to fruition. Now they prob wouldn't want us since we laughed at their invite. Obviously the new conference wouldn't want us. Where do we go? Stay in CUSA as the new bottomfeeder FBS? Try to revive the WAC with the CUSA leftovers?
I'm not sure the outcome would be favorable for us. We need about 5 years to develop a semi-competitive team. If this whole thing were to happen next year or within 2 years, I think we need to start praying.

The top of CUSA will not join MWC. ECU and USM is too far out east to join the MWC. I think we will have a shot in joining the MWC before they sent out invites to ECU and USM.

Not sure that's true MarineVet, I mean CUSA and MWC were actively pursuing a merger until legal stuff and money got in the way. But that goes to show that the schools were ok with the travel costs. One could say then, that it would be easier to start a new conference. Sort of having your cake and eating it, too.

I know lol. I used to shoot mid 40's. Always missed the first two shots at the 500 and 1 or 2 standing.

Guys, I know I am scanning your board. Most of us are quite happy to have all the new additions! I think UTSA will bring a lot to C-USA. Having some old friends leave is kind of tough for some of us. I think there are great potential for new rivalries and that they will develop quickly. Glad to have ya! I hope none of us go anywhere else.

RE: If say... CUSA breaks apart, are we the next Idaho?
You wouldn't be taken in a tophalf CUSA-MWC merger. But..the rump CUSA would still exist. I don't see that merger working out anyway. I don't think it works for the Big East, so simply doing the same thing with lesser teams isn't going to be any better.

Here's the (very) unlikely scenario where you guys might be in trouble...

I guess the only way you guys get Idahoed is if there was a tophalf CUSA-MWC merger being hosted by the MWC (so there wouldn't be a rump MWC), then...the Sun Belt raided what was left. And didn't take you guys. Assuming the top four CUSA teams (ECU, USM, Tulsa, Marshall) plus UTEP and La Tech left, then CUSA would be in serious trouble reputationally, but would still exist as a 8 team FBS conference (ok with 7 teams active with one moving up). The Sun Belt, sitting at 10 teams, decides to cherrypick who is left. If they took FOUR teams and IF they picked in the following order.... 1) FIU (travel partner for FAU) 2) Rice (baseball and Houston) 3) UNT and 4) one of the eastern left behinds to balance out the conference geographically....then and only then would you guys be in trouble. But you'd still probably be okay...unless there was a FCS to FBS moratorium that the NCAA wouldn't wave. But this would be really unlikely. If this unlikely scenario played out without a moratorium, it would certainly make Appys and Ga Southern's day.

I guess that PLUS the following scenario would really suck for you guys...ALL of the above (unlikely)...PLUS the MAC raiding whoever the Belt didn't take from the East. AND then deciding that, as a result of lingering resentment over UCF's short tenure (a geographic outlier) in the league, to not take you guys. In that case, even with a waiver of any potential moratorium, it'd be really ugly. But remember NM State will probably still be hanging out around there.

At any rate, its unlikely...I wouldn't worry about it. I'd worry about your trip to Mobile on August 30.

Good post, but we are not worried about that trip lol. You should be worried, since you have lots to lose. We are a 2nd year team with mostly sophomores. We are not the favorites to win, and widely forecasted to lose that game. You guys have a stronger team and playing at home, pressure is on you.

Hey..you are just one year away from being ... 100%, you-betcha, members of CUSA. When are you gonna stop using that excuse? :-)

RE: If say... CUSA breaks apart, are we the next Idaho?
When are we gonna stop using the "We are a year old" excuse? Probably when we are no longer a year old. And the fact that we will be CUSA members doesn't magically make us any better. They obviously did not pick us for our amazing football tradition and history of winning. So what does being a CUSA member in 2013 have to do with the price of the rice in China?

Your team is favorite to win, so if we beat you it would be an upset. We have been forecasted to lose that game by most sports writers I've read, such as Dave Campbell. It's not time for you to brag about beating our sophomores in our second year of play. Give us 3 years and we should be evenly matched. Then we can discuss how much we do or do not suck.
