Concealed Weapon Permits
In Texas classes & a written exam are mandatory plus you must qualify on the shooting range. Permits are for 5 years & for renewal you must take classes & requalify. Texas concealed weapon permits are recognized and honored in more than 30 states. Curious about the requirements to obtain a permit in your state & what additional states honor your permit.

RE: Concealed Weapon Permits
Alabama is really lax. I went down to the sheriff's office, paid $20, completed a short application, they run a quick background check, and presto, permit done.

To renew, we get a postcard in the mail that we then send back with $20, and get our new card mailed back in a few weeks.

My parents live in Texas, and they have talked often about the extensive requirements for their permit.

You can open carry in AL if I am not mistaken with no permit, too.

I'm in favor of very tough requirements to obtain a concealed weapon permit. Carrying a weapon, even for self-defense, is a serious responsibility.

GA is similar to what Bleeditred mentioned. Go to the sheriff's office, pay a fee, pass a background check and you're all set.

I like the idea of passing a shooting test, even if very basic. It would be nice to know that the people legally carrying guns can hit something if need be.

Sounds fun. I'm assuming that they aren't going to deny you if you aren't a sharp shooter, just making sure they are licensing someone that knows how to handle the firearm safely and can hit the broad side of a barn at 25 yards.

You must qualify to receive your license........no exceptions. A Range Master sets various distances, number of round to be loaded & fired, timing (#shots within designated time, etc). Targets are kept along with the written exam as a part of your qualifying package. The package, which also includes your application, a recent copy of fingerprints and certification from the Range Master is submitted to the Texas Department of Public Safety. The clearance process usually takes 60 to 90 days before you receive a license. It is also required by state law that you show your concealed weapon license at any time your drivers license is requested by a law enforcement officer. Must be shown even if you do not have a weapon at the time.
