Possible Solyndra 3.0 means more bad press
http://www.theatlantic.com/business/arch...ng/259573/
Quote:On Friday, advanced battery maker A123 Systems, the recipient of a $249 million federal stimulus grant, informed investors that it had just five months worth of cash left to fund itself. While it's a bit early to start administering last rites, the company's situation is looking pretty funereal. A123's share price is down to just about $1 from an all-time high of more than $25 in 2009. Management has plans to raise $39 million, in part by selling stock. But at least one analyst quoted by the Boston Globe believes they'll need an infusion of at least $400 million over the next 18-months.

While I do support federal grants for scientific research, I do not support the financial backing of specific companies or commercial industry subsidies.

Add this one to Beacon Power, Solyndra and Abound.

Obama's record as a venture capitalist just keeps getting worse.

If one of these suckers could just get a breakthrough though....... It would pay off a thousand fold. Sometimes you roll the dice. It would be a game changer. It's a great talking point for the GOP. I know why you guy's hammer it, but if we could get one of these alternatives to go...............

I'm with Atlantic on this. I don't mind funding research but this is different. These were manufacturing facilities that fit Obama's agenda.

Anyone care to guess how much of the stimulus went overseas?

Really good ideas can usually find investors in the private sector.

Ideological playthings? Not so much.

Is that the way you teach science? 03-banghead

These companies fail b/c they have poor ideas. It is not luck. And gov't has no business picking favorites anyway.

These companies fail because natural gas prices are plummeting and oil is cheaper.

Just a quick note. Fracking was pioneered in the public sector. So that does go 180 of the above.

No, that's not what the article or the onward links actually say. There has been some federally funded research in the area, like almost any area, but even the articles make it clear that the impact of the federal research is unclear. That's a far cry from the spin you are attempting to put on it.

I don't know Owl. I just googled "fracking pioneered in public" that article came up. Thought it was worth it to share. Google Eastern Gas Shale Project. That's what really started this process. Publicly funded btw.
