Meyer visited Saturday a week ago. It looked like he was signing a LOI. I talked with his dad and he is very excited to be coming in next fall.

Would it be a recruiting violation to outfit the student section with black sunglasses, black porkpie hats, and fake mustaches during Whyte's visit? If not, the Athletic Department should do it; a 4-star guy interested in Rice seems worth it. Maybe pass out sticks of blue rock candy to the students, too; or some "blue and gray" pun on blue meth; or some "Los Buhos Hermanos" t-shirts. Idk. Good luck, Coach! Reel this kid in!

Here's some info on "one of Southern California's quickest emerging 2017 prospects," Torrance Bishop Montgomery's Schakel (from a November 2015 Scout article):

Quote:Schakel, who has offers from USC and Rice, says four programs are recruiting him the hardest and he broke down what he likes about each of them. "Stanford, California, USC and Rice," Schakel listed.

Stanford: "I like how great the academics are, the location of the campus and the opportunity that Stanford provides."

California: "It's a wonderful academic place, they're going to be really good this year and it's just a great place."

USC: "It's right here in LA, they have great academics and both my parents went there."

Rice: "It's a great academic school and I have friends who go there so it would be a fun place to play."

Schakel says that Gonzaga, San Jose State, Grand Canyon, Washington State, Oregon State, Wake Forest and Utah State are also showing interest.

He has a good idea of what he'll be looking for in a school.

"I want a great academic place and a system that fits how I play; strong on defense, moves the ball and plays together," Schakel said.

Also: "Analysis: Schakel is a wing with good size who will be able to play both wing spots on offense. He's got a very nice stroke and is a big threat to hit three-pointers off the catch. Not just a three-point shooter, Schakel is better off the bounce and can hit pull-up jumpers from midrange and is improving around the basket. He has a high feel and is a nice passer. He's not a great athlete, but he's improved as he's gained strength."

Gonna be tough to lure a California kid away from schools like Stanford and Cal.

Bishop Montgomery and Redondo Union (where we have a baseball signee) are practically neighbors - kudos to the recruiters in the South Bay!

Little glimpse of what we're gonna get with Tim Harrison. Crazy good shooter for a big man.

He looks great! Thanks for posting. Reminds me a little of Letcher-Ellis, but with even better outside shooting skills.

RE: Rhoades Recruiting
I don't know if we've had a post tracking the other CUSA team's 2016 classes, so I'm just gonna throw this up for reference (I'll update it with any further commitments). The team in parentheses is the best offer they have:

Charlotte: 3* Quentin Jackson (Iowa State), Hudson Price (TCU transfer, 2.8 ppg), NR Najee Garvin (Appalachian St)
FAU: NR Devorious Brown, NR Jailyn Ingram (Mississippi State), Frank Booker (Oklahoma transfer, 5.0 ppg)
FIU: NR Greg Shead, 3* Raekwon Long (N. Kentucky)
LaTech: NR Jalen Harris (Duquesne), NR Daquan Bracey (Georgetown), NR Jacolby Pendleton (Tulane), 3* Oliver Powell (Ole Miss)
Marshall: NR Phil Bledsoe (Kent State), NR Jannson Williams
MTSU: NR Antwain Johnson (JuCo), Jacorey Williams (Arkansas transfer, 4.8 ppg), 3* Davion Thomas (Rhode Island)
UNT: 3* Curtis Hollis (Duquesne), NR AJ Lawson (Tulsa), Keith Frazier (Former 5-Star recruit), Ryan Woolridge (Former 3-Star recruit)
ODU: NR Randy Haynes (JuCo, Hofstra), NR Alassane Kah (JuCo), 3* Xavier Green (Providence), Trey Porter (George Mason transfer, 3.5 ppg), BJ Stith (Virginia transfer, 1.0 ppg), Austin Colbert (Illinois transfer, 1.7 ppg)
Rice: 3* Ako Adams (George Washington), 3* Tim Harrison (Cal), 3* Austin Meyer, NR Robert Martin
Southern Miss:
UAB: 3* Nate Darling (UNCG), NR Javien Williams, Deion Lavender (S. Illinois transfer, 6.6 ppg)
UTEP: NR Deon Barrett, 4* Tim Cameron (Tennessee), NR Kelvin Jones
UTSA: NR Tyrik Price
WKU: NR Tobias Howard (Ole Miss), Willie Carmichael (Tennessee transfer, 3.0 ppg)

For me, I'd rank the teams: 1. Rice 2. ODU 3. North Texas (depending on waivers and eligibility) 4. La Tech 5. MTSU 6. FAU 7. Charlotte 8. UTEP 9. WKU 10. UAB 11. Marshall 12. FIU 13. UTSA 14. Southern Miss

There were tweets from Evans, Lott, and Cashaw yesterday all pointing to getting ready for next year. OrangeCountyOwl and I both saw those as very positive comments.

Sad that's the way college basketball is but I saw those and was pretty excited too. Even better they said there is still business to take care of this year!

We have a right to be paranoid about transfers, has happened too many times recently. So yes, this is a great sign that the culture Rhodes is building is different from what was there before, which lead to many transfers. I take it that Marcus Jackson will return next season and it appears MLE, Lott, Evans are happy.

This team seems to have a very different attitude than the freshmen on Braun's 2011-2012 team.

Walt-while I certainly believe your observation. Any background on why you know/believe that? I will tell you, I remember a game late in that season (one of those %^$%^$ Braun Saturday afternoon games I think, but maybe not) that was really big and when the team came on the court from the lockerroom just before tipoff, I could see them looking around at the dozens of fans in dismay at the size of the crowd. I think those issues also affected them a lot.
