RE: OJ Mayo - Boom outta here!
Known for a long time, but sad the see the Grizz with their pants down on that. Even if they didn't want to re up him, he would have been great for a sign-and-trade.

Completely inept management.

They can still sign-and-trade him. They just don't have the right to match an offer.

Guess they didn't want to risk him signing the one year deal.

Can't afford him. They only have about $4mm to stay under the luxury tax, his 1-year was for $7mm.

Certainly can't S&T either, considering he'll get $8-$11MM in free agency.

RE: OJ Mayo - Boom outta here!
We have to move our 19 ppg jump shooter or we're going to screw ourselves and have no quality depth whatsoever. Hate to see Hollins and others turn on OJ, he'll be a quality player for years to come wherever he lands. It's sad to see him go, what a great contributor and professional over the years and never pouted once on the court like our $84 million man does on a nightly basis.

We need to move Rudy, if we continue at this pace without a bench we will become the ATL Hawks of the Western Conference, a good team that may get out of the first round but will never seriously contend for a title.

I'm not as familiar with the new CBA, but a team with cap room may still be able to give OJ bigger raises and maybe more years if the Grizz sign him first. I wanna say that changed with the new CBA, but the Griz can get a trade exception and maybe some assets by trading OJ.

There's no way OJ will get 8 to 11 million, or is he worth it.

OJ is a role player/backup. He can't defend his position and can't get around defenders, thus making him limited offensively.

Sign and trades seem to have limited benefit, particularly if you're close to the salary cap. The primary benefit seems to be getting a crappy player with an expiring contract to free up cap room in the future. An alternative strategy seems to be used when the player is a superstar. Many speculators have implied similar logic to the reasoning that Houston has little risk in pursuing Dwight Howard, even though he has little interest in re-signing there.

With a lower salary cap, perhaps it limits the benefit of s/t's.

Thread title is misleading, for now. Wallace has already indicated that they will match any offer. We will see how bad they want to keep him.

Misleading thread titles are supposed to be in the smack forum.

Or maybe just the ones I create.

I'm always happy.

It's easy to be happy with a clear conscience.

you can't pay the 6th or 7th man 8 million dollars. It just won't work. OJ isn't worth more than about a midlevel exception at this point in his career. Solid player but just not worth it

OJ would thrive in a place like Chicago.

Sign and trade for who/what? Seems that he was playing his best ball for us when the opportunity was there and we definitely needed him. We could have ended up with a whole new problem. It wasn't a given that we'd lose to the Floppers.
