OT: What do you call the mid-day meal?
Here in NC it is breakfast, lunch and dinner. I remember some people being confused by referring to the evening meal as "dinner." Could have been some of my relatives but can't swear to that.

Its breakfast, lunch, dinner where I'm from but I've heard it called breakfast, dinner, and supper.

Breakfast, lunch, dinner. There's also "brunch" and "linner" if you eat at an odd time.

RE: What do you call the mid-day meal?
I grew up with breakfast, lunch, supper.

Most people I know use supper & dinner interchangeably.

While I was in the Navy, meals were reffered to as B'fast, Dinner, Supper and Midrats (midnight rations aka leftovers)

I was in engineering and we had watch from 22:00 to 02:00. Eating in the engine room was prohibited so we rarely got midrats (officially that is). However, getting off watch at 2:00 am had its benefits. The baker was usually just pulling his first batches from the oven. Our baker was particularly skilled at pastry. Even his plain white bread, fresh from the oven and still too hot to slice, in the middle of the ocean after a long night of drills was way better than the mystery left overs.

ps: I would be scared of something called "linner"

Ahh...the midwatch wasn't nearly as bad as the rev watch (02-07) by the time I was finally relived (I was the MPA) the food was either gone or cold.

I preferred the midwatch myself. You get to enjoy some movies or play xbox before watch and got a decent sleep before the next day started.

Standing watch in Sonar had its pros and cons indeed. We usually listened to music or surfed the net depending on who was in charge of Combat. lol

We always ran engineering drills on the 10-02. It caused the least interference with topside watches. Most were asleep anyway. Well, they were asleep unless we ran a loss of oil drill on the main engine. It is the equivalent of shifting your car into reverse while doing 90 mph. Assuming you have a 135,000 hp engine in your car.

If they were running drills in the other engine room we spent our time hiding midrats from the chief.

Xbox? Is that like an Atari?

I say breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Growing up, my grandmother called them breakfast, dinner, and supper. I think the distinction between dinner & supper is going away.
