Accomplishments of the Religious Right
http://www.theatlantic.com/politics/arch...c.facebook

Quote:When the religious right formed, conservative Christians were energized around restricting abortion and same-sex marriage, reducing the size of government, and protecting religious freedom. More than a quarter-century later, these same debates innervate the movement. Little progress has been made despite their best efforts, and an increasing number of individuals now recognize the religious right strategy has largely been a failure. The irony of this turn of events is that Christians above all others know that true change must occur in hearts -- not just the halls of power.

RE: Accomplishments of the Religious Right
I wouldn't call it a failure. Their biggest accomplishment might be cutting federal funding for embryonic stem cell research for 8 years, which is substantial. And w/r/t abortion opinion has shifted in their favor. On the gay rights front, however, they're fighting a losing battle.

RE: Accomplishments of the Religious Right
Not sure if I agree with you on gay marriage a losing battle

Quote: Christian Coalition Group Pleased With Vote in North Carolina
The Craven-Pamlico Christian Coalition is pleased with the outcome of Tuesday's victory of the Marriage Amendment which was on the primary ballot. The statewide vote was overwhelmingly in favor of defining marriage as that between one man and one woman in the state’s constitution.“We are thankful for the vote by North Carolinians affirming that, in our state, marriage is between one man and one...

Also, note California voted to ban it before a Liberal activist Judge over-ruled the vote... very Constitutional may I add.

RE: Accomplishments of the Religious Right
The younger generations (under 40, esp under 30) are very pro gay rights. The gay marriage bans are doomed as more and more of them (us) become politically active and the older generations die off.

why are they "activist judges" when they rules against you while checks and balances are great when they consider striking down Obamacare?

you do realize 2 landmark gays rights cases are headed for the SCOTUS, right?

I would refer you to Jesus Christ. You can find him in any church or Bible.

I think a more appropriate question would be...Accomplishments of the far left.

Let's see....abortion, welfare, food stamps, 16 trillion in debt, gay "marriage", OWS, slavery, infanticide, entitlement generation....shall I go on? Didn't think so.

PUOSU.

The "religious right" as AL calls it, has a strong presence in the military and in medical care. It also gives far more to charity than other demographics. And there has been a huge impact in education, including parochial, charter and homeschools. So it looks like the Atlantic article summary was not particularly well researched.

I will say the "all or nothing" approach re: abortion has been a strategy of failure, and I would agree that criticism of pro-life leaders is warranted.

I strongly disagree. The WV/VA area is 65/35 against gay MARRIAGE, maybe not unions.

My opinion that they are activists is because they went against the balloted will of the people in the form of a vote, which is always wrong in my book.

Involving your view of Jesus into politics is a waste of precious sacrifice.

Politics is a tar pit for believing Christians. Don't invest your life into it.

That is par for the course at The Atlantic, unfortunately. The magazine and website are very agenda driven.

Their Atlantic Cities subsite has some interesting geography / urban planning / architecture stories however, and that is what keep me clicking their link.
