At least we're still relatively inexpensive (as far as college goes) which is fantastic! Getting a great education for a good price. I'm not complaining! Although, I'm shocked how low NSU's tuition price is when compared to the other public schools in the state. Maybe they have tremendous government funding or something!

Not from this state. Government funding to state universities has been cut by 60%. Thank you old MacDonnell. If you have not read he is not a fan of public education period.

There is a disturbing correlation between the amount of federal aid granted students and the cost of tuition at universities.
The more the government subsidizes, the higher the cost of education.
Not sure how that translates to a state level, but apparently Governor McDonnell is interested in testing that theory.
The Commonwealth of Virginia is still a great bargain for state schools compared to the rest of the country - both in quality and cost.

That reminds me of something. I live in South Norfolk. I don't do my grocery shopping here. It is a predominately low income area, I bought a great starter home cheap. But the food lion and farm fresh are noticibly more expensive to shop at. I was talking to my mom about this over diner one night and she actually asked the store mgr why because it upset her. It's opposite what you would expect. The mgr told her they raise prices to compensate for all the food stamps. Is that true? I have no idea. But quite disturbing.

I have heard this "effect" before, and it is , indeed, disturbing. Basically, whatever the subsidy is, prices increase accordingly to devalue the advantage gained by the subsidy.
Someone is making money in the process, but it seems to not occur if the subsidy was never there in the first place...........
OK, that's as UNPOLITICAL as I can get. Good discussion, however.

You are an excellent poster, TedHead, so I'll give you the benefit of the doubt: that your comment simply reflects your personal view that public education should be a more important priority than other gov't spending on things like transportation or law enforcement -- and that we as a Commonwealth should sacrifice spending elsewhere (on such things as raises for our state troopers, for example) in favor of boosting funding for ODU, NSU, etc. I disagree, but as a taxpaying (I presume) citizen you are entitled to voice your opinion.
But if instead your comment is in the nature of the gimme attitude of the mostly non-taxpaying "Occupy" movement (or of the current platform of the Democratic Party, for that matter) -- i.e., raw resentment for the success for the hardworking and productive among us -- then I urge you to rethink your stance. Any group or institution that is the recipient of taxpayer funds ought to be nothing but grateful. Unfortunately, most all we ever hear from those who feed off of tax dollars are demands for more and more; accompanied by carping comments directed at those who have the temerity to say "enough".
I fear that might be where you are coming from with your statement that the governor "is not a fan of public education period." If so, please bear in mind that it is not the governor's money to do with as he pleases. Nor is it the universities' money to demand be forked over to them year after year. It is taxpayer dollars, the spending of which ought to be justified by more than simple envy and resentment.
[My apologies if this political rant is misplaced. If our goal is to keep this new board politics free, please let me know and I won't do it again.]

I vote politics free. All it does is pidgeon hole and label our fellow posters. That's why I don't put up political yard signs or add bumper stickers on my truck. It makes other folks assume they know everything you believe based on whom you support in a particular election. It can tell someone "all they need to know" about you before someone wants to start a conversation. Personally, I think citizens' beliefs are much more complex than what can be squeezed into what defines today's democrat or republican. Ok... Politics free starting now :)
Anyway, I'm glad Broderick received an extension and I admire ODU for doing their best to make a quality education a relative bargain statewide.

RE: ODU Raises Tuition, Broderick Extended To 2017
The issue with the State consistently cutting funding is that they want it both ways. McDonnell wants us to not raise tuition, but wants to cut funding at the same time, while also having continued oversight of the university. While the state also wants us to bring in a significant amount of Virginia residents. If the state wants to cut funding, it should also lose some of its oversight, and allow ODU to operate more independently and increase its out of state enrollment. UVA has essentially privatized its business and law school.
What has separated Virginia from much of the rest of the South is education. We have a great education system, and businesses want to be here because of it. It should be a high priority, and it clearly is not one with McDonnell.

Well put, Jmadz, I agree. There's already a politics board, called The Spin Room ( HERE).
Although I hope your name/ODU email is "J-Madz"; otherwise, there's a small school in Harrisonburg that sounds eerily like your s/n..

I agree.. I try not to get into discussions or put out there what I believe. It's tough not to at times in a response that gives things away and especially more important not to on a message board. I went over to that spin room and read a bunch. It's pretty much the extreme of both sides yelling and the majority are republicans it seems so its just a pissing match.
