Fogelman: Hero or Villian
I was thinking back to something that happened over 30 years ago. To this day i still cannot decide if Fogelman was a hero or a villain in the deal. True he did step in and saved the franchise while it was about to go under after the first two years of operation. But again he walked away after just one year and gave up on the team. What makes it so interesting that every measurement you could use showed an improvement and maybe the team had turned the corner. The 1980 season saw the team almost match the total wins for the previous two seasons combined with a 14 win season compared to a combined 16 wins in the previous two years. Average attendance was up 38% in 1980 to just under 10,000 a game. Of the 16 losses 9 were by a single goal with 4 coming in either OT or a shootout A bounce this way or a bounce that way the team could have been in the hunt for a playoff spot.
