Bingo.....Larry Ellison, who most certainly has the money to buy the Grizz AND to pay the relocation fines/fees.

This was my first thought when I read he was a Silicon Valley guy, and his reported financial situation.

Guy is a paper billionaire, he's ridiculously young, he has his hands full with a company that is worth half what it was a few months ago and there are all kinds of allegations swirling about his business dealings. The guy from either CNBC or MSNBC? says there is only one Mark Cuban (Cuban walked away with 6 billion cash) and this guy can't walk away.

A LOT of companies these days are worth less than they were last year. As for Schlenker, if the power brokers in Memphis had left him alone and not back stab him and force him out of the project. We would have never needed to build the forum because the Pyramid would have been a 16,000 seats NBA quality arena.

I wonder if the city of Memphis was as aggressive pursuing the NBA as it was the NFL in the 80s if Memphis might have gotten an NBA expansion franchise over Charlotte. Especially with FedEx and Holiday Inn backing the pursuit.

Would have been nice to see Grandmama playing here.

I think in the 80s Memphis was bigger than both Charlotte and Orlando, and it's a murderer's row of big companies headquartered here in the 80s.

Besides HI, who was part of the murderer's row of the 80s?

NBC, Union Planters, Concord was emerging, Schering-Plough was more attractive, Kimberly Clark (not HQ'ed but bigger presence), and other companies I am not thinking of now.

Doh! I forgot the banks. Didn't realize Concord existed even back then. When did Schering Plough move to NJ?

Man, with HI and the banks, we should have a plethora of local execs with hospitality and financial experience who could build their own businesses in those industry clusters.

Plough merged with Schering in late 70s/ early 80s, but I think more of the company operations were handled here back then.

Concord started in the mid 80s.

I remember when Concord built their new hq on Winchester, and then sold out to First Data and moved to Denver. Boooo...

Goodlett Farms Pkwy.

I witnessed that building being built.

I wonder what happened to all the money made by locals in selling that company for $6 billion.

Same here. Who were the locals? What did they do? Are they still creating businesses? Here? etc. I remember that some Atlanta company bought out First Data, moved the hq and many of the employees, but kept some presence in Denver. The Denver Post and their chamber whined and whined and whined lol... serves them right.

RE: The new SIdney Schlenker
Around the time Concord got bought out, it and Accredo were up and comers, borderline Fortune 500 companies. At least with Accredo, the purchasers kept the local operation, until they too were bought out recently. Hopefully the new purchasers see the value of keeping local talent and, if they don't, that the local talent start new businesses here or join other local companies.
