We only lost Obas to MTSU and Polk...who was a walk on...to Purdue. Otherwise, the staff closed on all the verbals even though there were some BCS schools in the mix on a number of them. Excellent work!!

The team record in the power clean is something like 350lbs IIRC....Ryan Hunter hit a 319lb clean and jerk when he won the 105 kg and up class at the Canadian Junior weightlifting championships a year ago. That's a strong kid....

Jarid Brown... Offers from Toledo, Marshall and Temple. It looks like he was recruited to those schools as a WR/DB. Not 100% he will be a QB at Ohio, but that is the way it was released on Twitter.

Looks like they now have him listed as a DB.

Yep, most schools are represented on all the recruiting services. Then there's twitter and facebook.....though twitter is the big one. You get the local writers and even fans weighing in on the recruits on twitter. It's actually getting ridiculous on twitter with fans bugging recruits like crazy.

Brown received a verbal offer from Toledo last year, for the 2012 class. He supposedly was down to Toledo and Temple, but Toledo never sent him official papers because he was not going to qualify. He was recruited by both Toledo and Temple as a WR. I think he ended up going to prep school, but Toledo wasn't recruiting him anymore for the 2013 class. Not sure about Temple

I'd be surprised if he was recruited as a QB. Not much of an arm.

BG really signed a great class today. CMU did well. NIU's wasn't really what I expected after the Orange Bowl appearance, but that RB from Ohio was a steal for them.

I would say that Akron has picked up a very nice recruiting class. Heavy focus on speed and athleticism.

When is NIU's recruiting class ever ranked at the top? And yet look at the success they have had. They obviously know something about something.

EMU had a mid-MAC type class.

Heavy on QBs (two) plus others who will be athlete or safety. Roback is considered at least a 3 star QB and has a high ceiling. Our other QB is a gifted runner and was time 4.51 by EMU at a summer camp.

EMU had two kids fall to them late - Canty - a kid from Lansing who Cincy messed with and EMU had a scholarship to give.

Bell - a QB/Athlete from Los Angeles who apparently met NCAA standards but not Tulane's and was not admitted. He will be an athlete for EMU.

We gave out 21 scholarships but apparently waiting to pick up some late qualifiers, late JUCO graduates, perhaps a 5th year graduate student transfer or even a traditional transfer.

Yeah, if you want stars and ratings don't become an NIU fan. If you want a solid team that develops players they get to fit into a scheme they run then that is where it is at. That being said, as always I am impressed with Toledo's class, hopefully they develop into a good team, except when they play NIU. BG and CMU also looks great this year as well. If NIU can keep a coach their ratings and rankings will go up next year. Plus you don't get a ton of new guys after a game in January, it will take a year for the OB effect.

Looking at our class and Toledo's.....there's some great athletes that are going to be playing football in NW Ohio. Maybe more people will get off the couch and DVR the OSU game so they cn head out tot he Doyt or the Glass Bowl and see some LIVE football for a change.

Re the "stars" recruits get . Clawson mentioned in his press conference today that of the 10 players we had getting all MAC recognition this year, 8 had ** and two were walk ons. The bread and butter for the MAC are the projectable guys like Aaron Banks in our class...a 205lb safety that can grow in a couple of years into a 225lb Gabe Martin clone.

You're missing the point, but in reality no NIU didn't. People keep saying that NIU has had mediocre recruiting classes, but that is not the case.

This year NIU finished 8th in the MAC on Rivals with a 2.08 average. Many NIU signees not only did not have another DI-A offer, but didn't even have a profile in the Rivals database before today. Of course I wasn't talking about that in my first post. I was expecting NIU to blow everyone else away in recruiting this year. That didn't happen. And NIU is not going to always keep getting lucky with having such great coaches that are getting a lot out of their players. Eventually that is going to even out a bit.

But, on to my point about past recruiting classes. Last year NIU had the #4 recruiting class in the MAC and averaged 2.27. In 2011 NIU had the #2 recruiting class in the MAC and averaged 2.32. In 2010 NIU had the #3 recruiting class in the MAC and averaged 2.32.

So to show you in a better form:

2010 - #3 with 2.32 rating
2011 - #2 with 2.32 rating
2012 - #4 with 2.27 rating
2013 - #8 with 2.08 rating

See a difference with the 2013 class? I sure do.

Well in 2011 they had the #2 class in the MAC.

That's a good point, and that is what happens when you can develop the players. This is exactly what Boise State and TCU do. They get a bunch of 2 star and 3 star prospects that end up looking like 4 star guys by the time they are juniors and seniors.

You inspired me though to look at Toledo's All-MAC players.

Toledo All-MAC in 2013 (Offense/Defense) equaled one 4 star, four 3 star and four 2 star players. More than half of them were 4 star or 3 star players.

Well in 2011 they had the #2 class in the MAC.

Most of our good recent players have been from the 2008-2009 class which were ranked mid-MAC at best. The 2011 crew didn't have that much impact on last year's results. You're talking about NIU getting lucky with continued coaching - my point is that is isn't coaching at all- or at least not the major point - it's recruiting players, regardless of whether they're 2 stars or walkons. We've had a lot of turnover in assistant coaches as well as head coaches, so the coaching theory is a little weak.

That said, I hope it isn't coaching because you're right, at some point you will pick wrong with coaches.
