Your guess may be right. Or maybe it's more complicated than that.

It actually is a lizard:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Texas_horned_lizard

Quote:The horned lizard is popularly called a "horned toad", "horny toad", or "horned frog", but it is neither a toad nor a frog. The popular names come from the lizard's rounded body and blunt snout, which give it a decidedly toad- or frog-like appearance. Phrynosoma literally means "toad-bodied," and cornutum means "horned". The lizard's horns are extensions of its cranium and contain true bone.

http://www.honoluluzoo.org/horned_frogs.htm

Our mascot is Phrynosoma cornutum, the Texas Horned Lizard.

Then why not call yourselves the horned lizards, because that isn't a horned frog. Not trying to be a jerk but that makes no sense.

Because in the late 1890's when we adopted the mascot, they were more commonly known as "horned frogs".

As far as I know, we are the only team high school, college, professional with the mascot. Pretty cool.

However, if the wording is unclear, then give up BE and write a better contract next time. I expect since the suit was filed, it's the former. And if so, really really bad form, Frogs. Glad we got the Mustangs and Coogs instead!!!!

We're glad you got the Mustangs and Coogs instead, too.

The rest of your post begs the question it addresses.

THIS !!! And we are glad you got Memphis too! Hey, maybe someday the Tigers might even win a football game.

Best of luck to Coach Fuente, except if TCU actually manages to meet his team in a bowl game.

Outstanding position coach (QBs) and coordinator, who very much deserved a head coaching opportunity.

Dang, you rain just a little on their parade, and frogs/lizards jump out from everywhere. Bet they wouldn't have been so critical of the Big East, if they hadn't gotten the B12 invite, lol.

That is pretty cool. It's good to be unique.

Another cool mascot fact ... the Ford Mustang was named after the SMU Mustangs. Former Ford exec Lee Iacocca was responsible for developing the new Ford sports car, but they didn't have a name for it yet. He attended an SMU-Michigan football game and liked the spirit of the SMU team (and the mascot), so he named the new car "Mustang".
