I really don't think that comment is appropriate, nor do I think it is what the article is about.

I really don't care what you think is appropriate. You are a lawyer. You play both sides. Socialism herds us all toward the reservation. Think much?

Exactly. SuckOnAllRears is just a tired old man who is VERY entrenched in his ways. Sadly, he's rarely worth giving the time of day toward.

RE: Socialism in Practice: The Lethal Laboratory
Good column that hits the mark.
Quote:Mises explained analytically why the socialist system is irrational: no capital markets. No one knows what anything should cost. He said that the systems would either violate the commitment to total planning or else fail totally. He has never been forgiven for this breach of etiquette. He was right, and the intellectuals were wrong. The socialist commonwealths have collapsed, except for North Korea and Cuba. Worse, he was right in terms of simple market theory that any intelligent person can understand. That article is a testimony to the West's intellectuals: "There are none so blind as those who refuse to see."
Tom Sowell had an interesting observation a while back. He said that the leftists in academia are (paraphrasing, as I can't find the link I thought I'd saved) ticked off that their brilliance isn't recognized. They are most pissed off at BUSINESS, as those are the people most rewarded when successful, as compared to their own efforts. He wrote that those in academia are mad at PROFIT, and asks how money described as profit is any different than money under a different name. It's all about envy of those more $ucce$$ful than themselves.
Quote:College students are not informed of either the theory of socialism nor the magnitude of its failures, both economically and demographically. In the pre-1991 era, this was easier than it is today. The intelligentsia now has to admit that capitalism is more productive than socialism. So, the tactic now is to say that it is morally deficient. Worse, it ignores ecology. This was Heilbroner's recommended strategy in his 1990 article. He said that socialists would have to switch from charging capitalism with inefficiency and waste to charging it with environmental destruction.
How he was able to see this coming is interesting but he is correct. Many of the leading "environmental" groups are now more about left wing power than really about protecting the environment. It is kind of a cultural Marxism with the same goals - power over others' lives. I'll bet if you took a good close look at the "leaders" of the movement, you'd find the typical limosine liberals that do precisely the opposite than what they preach. When they themselves start living in the 19th century (energy wise) that they want us to move towards, maybe then they will have a little more credibility. Not that it will move many of us to the kind of change they say would be good for us. We prefer to live in the 21st century. Now, the greenies are targeting natural gas.
Awaiting predictable responses from the usual suspects.
Good read - thanks for the link, Owl.
