Totally agree. ESPN3 should not count as a T.V. game. I call it the "Ocho".

We've all played on ESPN3 plenty of times and I wouldn't exactly call it a party. This past season every home Middle Tennessee men's basketball game that was being televised was on ESPN3.

ESPN3 is great for fans interested in the game, but nobody else is going to watch a computer venue.

ESPN3 "the Ocho", is better then nothing, but not good for generating interest in the games, so I don't feel it is good for the fans in the long term. As a die hard fan, I'll watch it, if it's the only way I can catch the game... but, most people won't cookout and have friend over to watch a game on the 3. I believe it promotes a negative perception of programs that frequently appear on ESPN3, and not on the actual ESPN cable channels. I'm not a fan of ESPN3. The Belt deserves better.

Maybe only interested fans will watch, but that is also true with conventional TV games. You have to promote your product so that people want to see it. As far as watching games on the computer, you don't need to. You can plug the computer into a high def TV and watch it on the TV screen. As a matter of fact, I think in the future, a great deal of TV programing will be delivered via the internet, as evidenced by services like Netflicks. Here on the left coast, I was able to watch about 9 out if 12 Cajun football games via ESPN3 last season because of the local broadcast that were picked up (Kent, RC network, etc.) I am all for it!

Naw Fish, those guys are all correct; that new-fangled internet thingy is just a fad. it will never take the place of TV or newspapers.

Important thing to remember about ESPN3.
People under 30 are the ones most likely to be "cord-cutters" no longer having cable and relying on what they can see on the internet. The cord-cutters tend to get their sports via the internet streaming it through their XBox 360.
Our future season ticket holders and donors are guys sitting in an apartment playing video games in their downtime from class or work who pull up the ESPN3 app on their Xbox360 when they want to watch sports. These guys don't worry about whether our games are on ESPN, ESPN2, or ESPNU because they aren't subscribing to cable to even know whether the game is on ESPN, ESPN2, or ESPNU.
The future monetary life-blood of our programs are people who see our games presented the same way the SEC, ACC, Big XII games are presented to them.
Being on ESPN, ESPN2 is important for us because the people with the money to buy tickets and donate watch those channels but we are a group that isn't growing and is getting older.

Last season I actually would watch games on ESPN3 throughout the week. I'd just click on one that looked like it might be ok. I'm pretty sure I watched a couple of Sun Belt games like that. Next season I'll be watching more Sun Belt just to see what we're getting ourselves into and it helps that it's saved on the interwebs.

Mark, Fish and I are both old guys, and even we see the value of espn3. The huge value for me is that I can plug my computer into the TV and watch UL play at Troy without having to drive 16 hours round trip to do it. For the young fan, it's mostly about money; for me, it's about convenience. I don't care what network it's on, as long as I can watch. For Fish, he lives in California right now; there won't be a lot of SBC football on the air or cable networks in Bakersfield; but he can watch on espn3.

Yea, but most SBC teams are also streaming live. ESPN3 gives replays and such, but the day of not being able to watch or listen to your team play are all but done.

Says another old guy who uses technology. lol That's true, too. But the same principle applies; sports via the internet is the future.

Technically it's a national broadcast. I agree it's not like being on any of the other ESPN's, but it's still of benefit.

I do plug my computer into my flat screen. I have very fast internet and it looks like crap. ESPN3 is a joke. I do beleive that at some point online T.V. will rival satalite and cable, but ESPN3 just isn't there yet. Netflix looks good. Why can't 3?

RE: Wow !!......................... Not
I think some are missing the boat here...we are slowly growing our exposure. Three years ago we complained of a lack of exposure. Now, we have more games on television and more games moving to a very growing format in ESPN3. This is a huge positive for the league. No longer can we complain about the inability to see SBC games. The more exposure we get, the more our prestige and value will continue to grow. The only problem I have is that we signed a 8 year deal with ESPN. As long as we have look-ins within the next 3-5 years, the deal may not be too bad. However, for the length and amount of games that are being picked up on all formats, we definitely should be making more money on the deal. Heck, we made the same amount, or close to the same amount, with less games being picked up. In turn, we still have our regional agreements through the JV agreements with Cox/CSS. So, we should be able to maximize our television exposure these next 3-5 years. One thing we must work with our regional partners to do is a develop a weekly 30 minute program geared towards all things SBC. This will definitely allow our region to learn who each member school is and what we have to offer. I mean, with the number of NFL and MLB draft picks we produce per annum there is no reason why we shouldn't be promoting our individual players in an attempt to better help with establishing our brand identity.
