Chicago Teachers Unions demand 30% raise
http://news.yahoo.com/chicago-schools-ce...nance.html

The Chicago teachers' Union is demanding a 30% pay increase and class reduction sizes. Keep the below facts in mind:

- They work 3 months less than everyone else
- The district has a $700 million deficit
- Graduation rates hover around 50%
- 55% of one Chicago district's teachers make over $100,000 currently
- Their retirement fund pays at 75% of their highest pay, which is still more than most taxpayers will ever make.

http://chicagolampoon.blogspot.com/searc...20salaries

- 15 "Guidance Counselors" pulling down between $100k and $174k, with the average at $134
- A $147k drivers Ed teacher
- $148k for a sex ed. teacher
- 14 gym teachers each pulling down between $109 and $170k

Give it to them, with the stipulation that their jobs all become work at will. Then fire their sorry a$ses for poor performance.

It's important to keep in mind that cost of living in Chicago is among the highest in the country and $100k places you firmly in the middle class.

To those of you who oppose class size reduction and want to chase out those fatcat overqualified teachers with masters degrees, you wouldn't mind a 60:1 student teacher ratio with that one teacher fresh out of college for your own kids right?

Why does it cost so much to live in Chicago, light brite? Here's a hint. As wages go up, SO DOES EVERY F'N THING ELSE. This is why a Gdamn hike in minimum wage mean not a f'n thing. Stop your stupid social experiments, liberals.

Your argument just jumped the shark.

Let's see...local government is in the red. Local government pays the teacher salaries. Teachers demand more money. Do you see the real issue here? Hint, it has nothing to do with teacher/student ratios.

I don't have kids, and think the child tax credit should be a child tax payment for this reason.

I like facts more than Liberal drivel.

Alexandria, VAEstimated median household income in 2009:
Alexandria:
$77,095
Virginia:
$59,330

Mean prices in 2009: All housing units: $539,651; Detached houses: $755,470; Townhouses or other attached units: $565,329;

Median gross rent in 2009: $1,345.

Chicago Estimated median household income in 2009:
Chicago:
$45,734
Illinois:
$53,966

Mean prices in 2009: All housing units: $331,478; Detached houses: $304,679; Townhouses or other attached units:

Median gross rent in 2009: $886.

Guess your "high cost of living" (that isn't) doesn't correlate into $150k/year for a teacher's salary afterall. Imagine that...

But wait. IL just implemented one of the largest tax increases in history. How is it possible they couldn't afford this? It was going to cure all their problems that tax increase.

I'm shocked I tell you. SHOCKED!04-jawdrop

And there's nothing in that article that ties pay to performance. In fact, if pay increases their performance, then why aren't they already doing it?

Ignorance is bliss.

I think the demands for a huge increase in pay are ridiculous, but anyone who thinks that the average teacher doesn't hit the 2080 hours a year that "full time" employees work is a fool. There certainly are poor teachers whom don't make it to 2080, but every profession has those people.

To make up for the 3 months off, they would have to work an extra 14 hours per week or 3 hours/day.... assuming that your comparison has the rest of us working an "8 and skate" every day which in these times is unrealistic.

Again, I like numbers. Blame my non-union teachers.

My buddy works from 7-3, unless it's football or baseball season. ...which he gets paid extra for. He's off 2 weeks for Christmas, one week for Spring break, and is off 3 months in the summer (with the exception of the little time he's prepping his football team...which he gets paid extra for). He's bringing down 57K per year (not including the athletics). I've yet to hear him complain about his job or not getting paid enough. He's also getting the highest marks he can receive on his evals and his kids love him.

Between required classes taken every year for their teaching license, lesson plans, grading of papers, test creation, grading of tests, parent-teacher meetings, and teacher-administration meetings I can assure you the VAST majority of teachers hit that mark. I have 2 members of my family who not only are teachers, but members of a union, and they both put in approximately 2200 hours a year. As I said, I realize there are some bad teachers who don't put in the extra effort, but you have that in any profession...

Ok... and I also agreed that the demands for a 30% raise were insane. I was just pointing out that saying they don't work a full year is ridiculous.

Hmm, did they know that to begin with? Or is that something they spring on them after they sign their binding, lifetime contract?

Yep, and they, themselves, don't complain about their job. They love it. They don't want to be accused of being part time employees, however. It is total disrespect to them.
