Any news on the Big East's future? Who's 14 in football, who is on the short list for commissioner, what are our bowls, and TV arrangements.? It looks like nothing will be made public until the playoff is settled.

At least with respect to expansion and the bowls, I don't think those issues can even be truly addressed until the playoff is settled, much less made public (and that goes for every conference). The Big East should have a plan to cover various scenarios if they know what they're doing, but they can't really finalize anything until everyone knows how the postseason is going to look.

Unless the Big East signs with ESPN again, the very earliest that the Big East can field legitimate offers from other TV networks is the fall (I believe September).

I doubt any real news comes out until this fall when the Big East starts negoting with the other networks.

Those are a lot of ifs, Frank.

Nothing but rumors and crickets.

But for comparison, almost nobody (including swami extraordinaire Greg Swaim) had Bowlsby being named XII commish before the announcement was imminent. Even the BE was pretty tight-lipped prior to announcing Memphis and Temple (and even Navy to some degree) after being very obvious about UCF, Houston, SMU, Boise, and SDSU.

The bowls have been more or less tabled until after the BCS format is established. TV negotiations can't begin before Sept. 1 with ESPN or anyone else until Nov. 1.

The bottom line is patience. All will come, but we're going to have to wait.

Here's a quick rundown on what Bailey said:

* Talked to all coaches/ADs; everyone's upbeat about the coming league.
* The permanent commish should be in place by AUG; he/she will make any decisions on new bowls (re: Poinsettia)
* SDSU is the 'perfect' type of school for the league
* He dropped a 'Memphis State' reference (negative points for that, lol!)
* On the TV deal: the reality is that a number of media outlets are interested in the league, one with a 'national footprint, with four time zones'. Also interested in an outlet (or outlets) that will help enhance the league's image
* Not only does the conference have great tradition, it now stretches coast-to-coast
* On BYU: the Big East has a lot to offer an institution; would welcome and listen to any school wanting to join

One note about the guy: he's a pretty smooth talker. That should come in handy, the next couple of months

TV negotiating begins Sept, open bidding in Nov, World and Conf ends late DEC. End of story.

Sheesh. We only changed the name to the University of Memphis back in 1994. The incoming freshmen weren't even born the last time it was officially called Memphis State.

"Memphis State" doesn't bother me. That's the school I got my undergrad degree from. No big deal. Young folks need to get over it. All of us who went to Memphis State will be dead one of these days, lol.

I thought your degree was from West Tennessee State Teachers College.
