Marshall Adds Morehead State To The Basketball Schedule
Quote:Men's Basketball Adds Morehead State to Schedule

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. - For the first time in five seasons, the Marshall men's basketball team will place Morehead State on its schedule as a four-year contract was announced Tuesday.

Marshall adds Morehead State

I don't mind this series as its an easy drive to see the Herd. As long as Morehead has a decent RPI.

We should play them and Ohio every year.

Actually I think we should have Morehead State, Ohio, Akron and Kent State on the schedule each year as long as each can deliever a decent RPI. Scheduling for basketball is much different than football. As long as someone can deliever a decent RPI I don't care what the name is on the jersey.

I think we should play Belmont, Iona and schools like Cincy and Syracuse again.

I could see them on the schedule year to year; but the only sure yearly series outside of WVU should be Ohio. Schools like Morehead and Kent and akron can go from solid to invisible in a season and I don't think we should trap ourselves in a long term series.

RE: Marshall Adds Morehead State To The Basketball Schedule
So are our scheduling problems going away now that we've established ourselves as a decent RPI team?

Basketball is a 2 edge sport. If you have a bad RPI no one in the country wants to play you OOC. If you have a decent RPI no one wants to play you on the road. Most teams usually defend their home court well. Marshall has like a .719 winning % at the CAM since we started playing there in 1981. All those 15-15, 14-16 mediocre seasons we usually won our gams at home.

RE: Marshall Adds Morehead State To The Basketball Schedule
Morehead St. in recent years is a top 3 OVC school whose RPI was 166 last season. We played 14 OOC games last year, five of our games were against lower teams: High Point (268), UNC Wilmington (214), Alabama St. (308), Northwestern St. (217), and Jacksonville St. (216). Not to mention we played one non-D1 school that I can't even remember. So nearly half (6 out 14) of our games were against worse teams than Morehead so I think it would be safe to say that playing them on an annual basis would not hurt us or our RPI, and it would give us Huntington folks the opportunity to see the Herd play a road game.

Morehead St.'s last nine years of RPI
116
77
84
141
233
294
321
260
184

6 of the last 9 years they were in the 100's or higher. You people talk about scheduling as if the only games on our schedule were Cincy, WVU, and Syracuse. When in reality scheduling a tough schedule is important but winning is important as well. Go look at Oakland's recent schedules. They play a ridiculous OOC schedule and go 4-10ish. Then they go 16-2 in conference but they finish 20-12 and never make the tournament at-large with an OOC SOS in the top 10. Morehead would more than hold their own in the RPI and we could likely beat them 9 out of 10 times. I'm not saying schedule 14 Morehead St's just that they would fit in our schedule with the winnable decent RPI schools.
