I was going to answer your question by saying we replaced common sense and logic with public education.

Absolutely horrible what happened to the girl in the story. Hopefully that judge is run out of town next election.

This girl's situation is an example of laws going beyond the "intent" of the law.

My middle-school son got 3-days' worth of afterschool detention for hugging a girl good-bye for the weekend on the sidewalk as she was getting into her parent's car.

Some teacher felt it was serious enough to go pull them both in, walk them to the principal's office, fill out a statement, and meet with the parents (along with the principal)....

God forbid this teacher should have spent that time on teaching, preparation, or looking for kids fighting, doing drugs, etc....

Anyway, the rant is aimed at the f'd up system that can't prioritize, all the way up to the legislative courts making these types of head-scratching decisions.

Funny, our resident teacher and defender of all things public schools, hasn't commented.

Since she is a minor, shouldn't the parents be fined and sent to jail for her truancy? They are, after all, responsible for her.

If I read it correctly it says that they left her to basically fend for herself. If that's the case they should be in jail for far worse.
