RE: ODU Fans--Question about JMU Fans
I am quite sure ODU would be doing the same thing if Selig said no to CUSA. What most JMU fans were going through was a grief process, which it seems to have resolved itself for the most part. Was there a lot of overreaction? Sure, but I think you need to look at it from their perspective and realize that the JMU administration is to blame for how JMU Nation is feeling at the moment. The JMU administration handled this whole situation very poorly. They also handled the Brady case poorly as well as the WKU bidding poorly. I won't say that they were not being whiny or that they were acting a little childish when it came to predicting ODU going to CUSA or winning last year because they were. But I think a lot of them were in denial and didn't want to believe that ODU's administration was getting things done while JMU's administration were twiddling their thumbs. And did they get a taste of the humble pie, you bet and many of those on that board needed it. But several ODU fans on both boards can also use a bit of humble pie as well. We all know that every school has fans that go over the top, but that isn't a reflection on that school or their fans, it is a reflection of that person and or those who are participating in that kind of banter.

With that said, I am happy for ODU and wish ODU the best. My avatar on caazone is hburg. And as some of you know I was recently accepted into both ODU and JMU and into both schools nursing programs. The biggest reason I chose ODU nursing programs over JMU's is because I thought ODU had a better nursing program and they were more flexible, allowing me to do the things I wanted to without being constricted to attending on campus classes. I am a transfer student from Blue Ridge Community College (BRCC) near Harrisonburg, with an Associates Degree in Nursing and will start at ODU through BRCC beginning this fall upon passage of state boards. Anyway, while I will always root for JMU and hope and pray that the new administration will move the program to FBS, I will be rooting for ODU as well as wishing ODU the very best, unless ODU is playing JMU ;-).

RE: ODU Fans--Question about JMU Fans
I think 99% of ODU fans want to see Madison jump to FBS so our rivalry can really kick it up a notch. Most of us know what it is like to be emotionally attached to a professional team or school that just doesn't want to take the steps necessary to compete, even when the resources are available. We can fully understand how the Dukes are feeling and how the letter from the administration last week had to be a kick in the gut. But our reaction to this is straight tied to the way JMU fans have acted during the 5 years since we started up football (and really, before that). It has really gone into overdrive in the last 2 weeks.

You addressed that and you are right, there are some goofy ODU fans, as well. But that is what makes a rivalry and rivalry for the fans, right? If we don't give each other a little grief, what fun is it? 03-nutkick

Exactly! The game last year was one of most incredible football games I have ever attended! On the FBS level that rivalry would only increase tenfold. However, unless JMU's new president directs the athletics toward an FBS conference I don't see this rivalry coming into full fruition.

On the other note, talking smack and poking fun at each other is just a part of any rivalry! However, as the JMU sports blog proves, some people take smack to an entirely new level when emotions are running high. All in all, best of luck to JMU and new ODU student jmufan (see the above post)! I have a great friend in ODU's Nursing program - it's tough and very well respected!

Quite a few of our fans would be pissed too, myself included, although their anger towards ODU was misplaced. We took advantage of our opportunity....nothing wrong with that.

We've had our disagreements in the past, but frankly this post echos my feelings word for word.

To a new start then on a new board. How about it? 04-cheers

RE: ODU Fans--Question about JMU Fans
JMU fans are just like all other fans. A small minority are a-holes, another subgroup acts like a-holes in certain situations but aren't really that bad, the majority are ok. On a message board, you often hear a lot of hyperbole, just like some in this thread. It's pretty silly when people generalize an entire fanbase, whether it be ODU fans to JMU fans or vice versa. To the Marshall fans, I was in Huntington for the playoff game in 1994 (remember those?) and if I were to generalize about the sampling of interaction I had with Marshall fans that day I'd probably think they were all absolutely nuts... but I know that can't be the case ;-)

Before the news came out that ODU was going to CUSA, a lot of JMU fans were really hoping that both teams would move up to a conference together. A lot of the reaction from JMU fans is a combination of disappointment that this idea didn't come to fruition and frustration with the idea of our administration doing nothing. We'll see what happens, it would be a shame for the rivalry to die away.

RE: ODU Fans--Question about JMU Fans
Those guys are hurting. They have looked toward to FBS for many years.
Some of the reactionary posts are really reaching.
Posts like:
....our lack of good basketball has nothing to do with going to an FBS conference (it does when your competition DOES have good bb)
....we have 20,000 - 30,000 alums in the DC market, so we can own it (that doesn't even dent an 8.55 million pop. area)
....the MAC is academically better than CUSA anyway; with our great academics we should not consider CUSA (even though Rice,
Tulane, and Tulsa are ranked above any MAC school)
....we might want to hold out for the BE. (sheesh)

I think the most pathetic thing is here:

Sad.

JMU has 108 signatures! Only 17 away from their stated goal of 125!

I tell ya, if I was part of the state admininstration, I'd really think about doing something once I see the bevy of people that are supporting that initiative. 125 people is a LOT. 01-wingedeagle

RE: ODU Fans--Question about JMU Fans
The thing I find with a lot of them is that they say they are no longer going to donate. Well... that's what drives a move to FBS. Money. They already have a very low donation % and the few that do are going to stop donating because they don't go to FBS. They need to do the exact opposite and really push on sponsors/donors. The administration will listen to donors. I don't blame their administration for not doing it. Yes they sell out a nice stadium every game. I would LOVE to have JMU move up and play us regularly but they aren't helping their cause and the media market doesn't help either.

I wonder if the 18-24 months statement by their admins was a feeler. Lets see if this will spark the donors and alumni to start donating for the cause but nothing happened? Shrug.

Agreed. I have no interest in continuing this "rivalry." Leaving them in the dust if far more satisfying anyway.

Just a little too arrogant for my taste. But their board have become the equivalent of an 8 car pile-up...I just can't keep from watching them. They've made for great comic relief this week.
