Seriously UTSA/ playing D1
How many years have you played D2, D1aa, and D1a FOR YOUR RESPECTIVE SPORTS?
I guess what I want to know was football the only sport you didn't have as a D1 program and you did the 1aa to d1a transition or have you not been D1 in any sports till lately?

RE: Seriously UTSA/ playing D1
We play D1 in every other sport. As to "how long" each sport has played in D1 (aside from football), some other runners will have to chime in. But for the bigs (bball, volleyball, baseball), we've played D1 for a while.
2011 was our first football season.
Basically, (for football) 2012 is the first transitional season to D1 and we play a full WAC schedule and we count as an FBS opponent for all teams. 2013 is the second transitional year and we play a full C-USA schedule. We will be a "full-member" of C-USA and be Bowl eligible in 2014.
FYI, I'm stating we are bowl eligible in 2014 based on this:
http://www.ncaa.com/news/ncaa/2011-01-19...-auto-bids
Things may change, but I believe this is still in effect.

RE: Seriously UTSA/ playing D1
I believe that UTSA has always been a D1 school for all sports (and I'm mostly referring to before they had football). UTSA didn't start fielding varsity sports (i.e. NCAA-sponsored sports as a NCAA member institution) until 1981 (I don't know how many sports UTSA originally started out with but one of them was men's basketball); with the exception of women's basketball, they started out as an independent school in all sports until 1986 and although I'm not clear whether they were D1 or not when they were independent, all of UTSA's sports joined the Trans America Athletic Conference that year and that conference has always been a D1 non-football sponsoring conference (that conference is now called the Atlantic Sun Conference).
In 1991, UTSA joined the Southland Conference (another D1 conference) in all sports where they have been at till June 30 of this year (since we join the WAC on July 1). In regards to the football program, UTSA was considered a D1 FCS independent for the 2011 season. And as slow-runner mentioned, UTSA will be transitioning to D1 FBS this fall. Now according to the WAC spring preview guide, UTSA Football will be eligible this upcoming season right away to compete for the 2012 WAC Championship: http://www.wacsports.com/ViewArticle.dbm...=205411321 (we just wouldn't be bowl-eligible though). I'm not sure though come 2013 when UTSA joins C-USA is we will be eligible to compete for the 2013 C-USA Championship right away when we join the conference that year (even if we were, UTSA still wouldn't be bowl-eligible till the 2014 season).
This article has the list of all the conferences (and years they were members of each) that UTSA's athletic program has been a part of throughout their history (on the left-hand side): http://www.mysanantonio.com/sports/colle...535740.php
Also, if you want to know more about UTSA's first conference that it was a member of, you see the following Wikipedia article: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Atlantic_Sun_Conference

So. if I understand this correctly:
D1 since started sports, just in "minor" conferences.... i.e. non-football playings ones. So D2 or whatever. When you started football a few years ago you were 1aa and are moving completely 1a when you become a WAC member next season and then onto CUSA?

That sounds correct. But in other sports their is no Div 1aa. They are either div 1 or not. Only football has div 1aa. We just have been in minor conferences for all other sports. Not D2, but D1 conferences in all other sports.
Our conference last year (Southland Conference) has an automatic bid to the NCAA bball tournament since it's a Div 1 bball conference. The same is true for other sports. UTSA is the Div 1 host school whenever the NCAA Final Four or the NCAA Regionals for BBall and VBall are in San Antonio.
So:
2011 was a football Div 1AA (FCS) schedule.
2012 is a full Div 1A (FBS) schedule this year in WAC.
(transition year 1)
2013 Div 1A (FBS) schedule in 2013 in C-USA.
(transition year 2)
2014 - Full 1A (FBS) member and bowl eligible.
Runners, If I have something wrong please correct the above.

It seems you're having trouble understanding this.
Southland is a football playing conference, UTSA just didn't sponsor football.
Southland is a D1 conference, not a DII, not a DII-equivalent.
There is no non-FBS category for non-football sports. In every sport other than football you're either D1 or D2 (or lower), there's no in between.

For sure UTSA has been D1 since 1986, their 1st year as members of the TAAC (they were informally a D1-AAA school, meaning a D1 school but without a football team as D1-AAA is commonly referred to). And yes, when UTSA began their 1st football season, UTSA was considered a D1-AA school and now that UTSA is going into the WAC this fall (and CUSA afterwards), we will be a D1-A school. However, as slow-runner mentioned, we will begin our two-year transitioning period from D1-AA to D1-A this fall thus being a provisional D1-A school this fall but we'll be a "full-fledged" D1-A school in 2014, the 1st season that we'll be bowl-eligible.
