They are (despite what some of the ininformed think) much farther along in football than your other options.

Also, they would also DOMINATE the Sunbelt in BKB.

RE: Sun Belt expansion with who???????
Personally I just don't think that Benson is taking into consideration anything except what he wants to do, which is to add UT-Arlington. I forget, is he the WAC or the Sun Belt commissioner, or both?

Would like to see the Sun Belt formally or informally make an offer to App State. Believe you would have another member right away.

Would like to see GaSo in the Sun Belt, but if they will not give them an offer right now due to some reason, would like for them to invite them soon. Especially if it's likely that someone is going to leave. After all GaSt will be in the SEC soon. I don't think that it's ever been mentioned by anyone on any Sun Belt thread, but GaSt is in a big market. I know, I was surprised also, go figure.

I'm very informed. Was in a conference with them once.

Here is the history of how much farther along they are:
New Mexico State

NMSU didn't dominate basketball last time. They made no NCAA appearances, never won the conference tournament nor the regular season title. They did get one division title.

Why exactly should we throw NMSU a bone? When their football conference went out of business in 2000 we did that and had to listen to grumbles about wanting to be in the WAC, they jumped at it got away from us. They got what they wanted and we moved on.

Only four seasons above .500 since 1967 in football, ouch:/

I think NM State gets added in a pinch if one more team were to leave. Two more and Idaho starts reentering the conversation as a fb only.

Travel costs aren't nuts for App State if we add them and NMSU. 12 teams -> divisions -> better travel.

Better travel for the East. You'll have to do better.

I've said before that I wouldn't completely rule out NMSU but the idea bailing them out is a valid reason is wrong.

Think that you have to trust Benson and the Presidents in this situation. Benson and the SBC share a history with NMSU and if we don't bring them on board, there is probably more to it than mileage.

Let's think about this.
Football carries 80% of the equation in the Sun Belt.
NMSU is a terrible football program proven over many years with no hope of even being decent.
Not a single school would ever consider them a rival or a game they would look forward to.
The state of New Mexico may as well be in China in terms of how people in Bama, Tenn, Fla, Kent, Ark, La, Ga relate to that state.
The travel costs creates a burden for every other school in the conference.
NMSU will be bolting as soon as they get a chance to join schools in their region.

Not going to happen unless the Belt needs 4-5.

Hey, man. I agree. The travel would still suck for the western teams(albeit substantially less). The response was in relation to App State.

Hey man, I'm not saying they'd be undefeated in bkb conference play by any stretch!

But they'd be great competition for you after losing UNT and would certainly be an upgrade over "Louisiana" basketball.

Would still have to play three teams vs. the opposite division per year. Plus olympic sports would see increased travel. I'm not anti-NM State though, as long as it doesn't interfere with GS getting an invite, I'm not against them. It stretches the Sun Belt's TV market from North Carolina to New Mexico. That's a lot of TV sets. NM State gets a slice of the El Paso and ABQ markets, that's an extra ~2 million ppl. They bring solid basketball and Texas State/UTA give them neighbors "nearby" (used loosely). When compared with other options like Liberty (polarizing), JMU (unwilling), Jack State (too small), and Sam Houston St (same probs GS has). They don't look so bad. SHSU is the only one out of that group that I like.

3 games a year is not nutty travel. And that's once every however many years you have to go all the way to New Mexico. I'm probably a little more willing to take them since I'm used to the CAA in Georgia.

As I said in the other thread, all this waiting makes me think the current public candidates are not wanted by everyone. Either new candidates need to be found or certain presidents need some convincing.
