That story is wrong...

My father was covering WVU when Nehlen was hired, and later wrote a book on Nehlen. I remember when Nehlen was hired and when came into Morgantown, his first comment was "the first thing we've got to do is get that ungodly glob off the helmet"...

His wife was related to a fellow in Kansas City who was in sports marketing and advertising. I don't remember his name, but he came up with the Flying WV logo in about 15 minutes, and sent it to Nehlen less than 24 hours after he asked him to look into it...

The man did it for Nehlen as a favor. WVU didn't pay diddly...

The article from WVU Alumni Association quotes Coach Nehlen and has a copy of the artist's letter where he charged $200 for the logo. No offense, but I have to take the word of West Virginia University over your story. 04-rock
