Since you've posting this everywhere I've looked so far...

My father was covering WVU when Nehlen was hired, and later wrote a book on Nehlen. I remember when Nehlen was hired and when came into Morgantown, his first comment was "the first thing we've got to do is get that ungodly glob off the helmet"...

His wife was related to a fellow in Kansas City who was in sports marketing and advertising. I don't remember his name, but he came up with the Flying WV logo in about 15 minutes, and sent it to Nehlen less than 24 hours after he asked him to look into it...

The man did it for Nehlen as a favor. WVU didn't pay diddly...

Random and completely useless fact: Ottawa, KS is around 20ish miles south of Lawrence on US59. I used to drive it all the time when heading to Wichita so that I could avoid paying tolls until hitting I-335 in Emporia.

The article from WVU Alumni Association quotes Coach Nehlen and has a copy of the artist's letter where he charged $200 for the logo. No offense, but I have to take the word of West Virginia University over your story. 04-rock

RE: Legend of the flying WV
I know they've glorified the story some. But my story is the real one. My father and I were standing right beside Nehlen when he first saw the new logo...

Now his child did draw something similar. But it was the guy in Kansas City who came up with the logo...
