No merging just confuses a problem that already handles itself as dead topics die and active ones bump

That's not going to happen. Merging threads is the best way to prevent 45 threads on the same article/issue.

I think this is a healthy topic to discuss but the options were not exactly fair. It was sort of a "Heads I win, Tails you lose" situation.
