Connecticut Gov, a BC grad Urges Uconn/BC to "Mend Fences"

Not a whole lot here but still interesting given the timing. 05-stirthepot

"The two schools have been at odds since Boston College left the Big East to join the Atlantic Coast Conference in 2005, and the state of Connecticut led a lawsuit over the move."

"But last fall, amid a national shakeup of athletic conference, Malloy acknowledged that UConn had an interest in moving to the ACC.

Boston College athletic director Gene DeFilippo told the Boston Globe that he had blocked the move, saying it was a matter of "turf."

He later issued a public apology, saying "while I harbor some ill feelings toward the University of Connecticut regarding the lawsuit, depositions and derogatory comments from UConn officials when we announced our decision to join the ACC, it was inappropriate to express personal feelings that might have been construed as the position of Boston College or the Atlantic Coast Conference."

Malloy said that whatever happens with the ACC, the two schools should realize that playing each other, as they already do in many other sports, would benefit both schools and the entire region. UMass, which recently upgraded its football program, is the only other FBS school in New England."

I know there is a lot of information out there about some Boston College fans and the BC athletic director not wanting UConn in the ACC. While most of this is true and there is a big segment of the BC community that would never want UConn in the ACC, I actually would welcome the Huskies.

It is no secret that the past few years have seen a pretty sharp decline in BC athletics (except for Men's Ice Hockey which remains the best team in the Country). There is growing unhappiness with the overall direction of the athletic program. I think this began with the firing of Al Skinner (who in my opinion was a great basketball coach and a very classy guy) and it continues with the underperformance of the Eagles football team and the ineptitude of our current football coach. To make a long story short, patience with DeFilippo is running thin. There seems to be a general malaise surrounding BC athletics since the football team appeared in back to back ACC Championship games.

I am no fan of UConn. I think the lawsuit they spearheaded against BC was ridiculous and I actually can not stand their men's basketball coach who I think is an ethically comprimised blowhard. That said, I think it would be great for BC if UConn joined the ACC. There would be immediate intensity injected into that rivalry and it would go a long way toward lifting the malaise that now hovers over BC athletics. BC vs UConn games would immediately generate a lot of interest throughout New England. Media coverage would increase and fans would be fired up to see the Eagles play the Huskies.

I agree with this article's premise that BC vs UConn is a rivalry that makes sense. I also think the University of Connecticut is largely a strong University that could fit the ACC academic profile. I do not know if the ACC has any plans to expand to 16 but if it ever happens, I think it would be great for BC to have UConn as one of the two additions.

I don't think you mend fences through the media.

Shorter version of governor's remarks: "Let's let bygones be bygones, BC, and please don't block UConn if there is another vacancy in the ACC."

They don't have to be in the same league to play each other more often than NOT AT ALL, of course.

I don't like BC and I don't like the ACC. I want UConn in the Big East, which is a far more interesting conference.

But UConn & BC should play each other annually in football and basketball. It would be the most intense rivalry in the Northeast, now that Pitt & WVU don't play anymore. From a financial and public relations perspective, it would be a huge win for both schools.

BC vs UConn in Hockey East will almost certainly be happening. Expect UConn to be highly competitive soon.

Governor Malloy,
Give it up. Stop making the entire state of Connecticut seem like a big kiss-ass.
You will never get BC's support in a bid to join the ACC.

If getting into the ACC is that important to you, you should be speaking to the presidents of the other ACC schools that decided Pitt was the better choice last September.

While true, your incompetent athletic director has more to do with this than any other factor. UConn and BC should probably play each other, but I don't think either program really needs one another, especially with UMass available for a New England partner.

I am no fan of UConn. I think the lawsuit they spearheaded against BC was ridiculous and I actually can not stand their men's basketball coach who I think is an ethically comprimised blowhard. That said, I think it would be great for BC if UConn joined the ACC. It would be fun (though any Hockey East games will require a mercy rule). I just wonder if the general public feels the same way that the message board community does about the rivalry. I know some BC fans that don't care either way about UConn, and vice-versa.

UConn and ND would be a great pair that would stabilize the conference. I would think the Big 10 or 12 would move quickly to add Rutgers if UConn were to join the ACC (and likewise for UConn if Rutgers joined with ND).
