ESPN: Big East is "an amoebic blob"
Right now it is nothing but an amoebic blob. Big? Yes. East? No. Relevant? Not really.

The Big East sans West Virginia, Pittsburgh and Syracuse, certainly isn't true to Gavitt's vision and only someone with disturbed visions could conjure up the future behemoth that will partner SMU, Houston, Memphis and Central Florida on the basketball court alongside traditional powers such as Georgetown, Villanova, Seton Hall and St. John's.

Tim Burton's college conference, anyone?

This is nothing but a bastardization, a muck up of what made the Big East special before with little to make the league look enticing down the road.

Some interesting points about the identity of the Big East. Does it have one? Is this marriage going to work? Will be interesting to see how it all develops but it seems the media is not going to be kind to the league (not that they ever really have been, for FB anyway).

I don't get it. Nothing has changed today except the Big East is looking for a new commissioner. Did 2 teams bolt and leave.
WTF is the big deal?

More espn idiots using anything to bash the Big East. Remember contracts are coming up and espn wants to keep the basketball contract.

WTF is the big deal?

The unhappiness on the part of the Presidents had to stem from something... less money than they expected, most likely. Unhappiness with Meatball's handling of expansion? Whatever it is, the notion that the BE Presidents are enthusiastically on board with whatever is going down is obviously not the case. Will be interesting to see what happens.

Actually I think it's more of wanting to have someone on board that has more big conference background. I put my money on the sec or pac12 guy coming on board. I don't think the presidents have been happy with M for a long time and finally decided to can him before the tv deals come up for bidding.

The new Big East does have an identity, it is a conference of metropolitan (and private) universities with local fan bases.

This gets a bad rap because it is dissimilar to other conferences.

So the basketball schools and some others didn't like the football adds, go join the A-10. The Presidents turned down a decent ESPN offer last year. That wasn't Marinatto's fault.

Yeah, this is what I'm not getting in a lot of these reactions today. The Big East, having taken steps to restabilize itself, has now fired the guy who was steering the ship when it started taking on water. So of course THE BIG EAST IS DOOMED!

Agree. Many folks inside and outside the BE have said for years that Marinatto needs to go, so today, he goes, and the Chicken Littles come out in droves.

And exactly what schools did Dana O'Neill have in mind "to make the league more attractive" than the ones it actually just landed? That it could actually get?

When was the last time Seton Hall was a basketball power?

Typical of an entertainment organization (ESPN) which has become more about writing glorified smack board posts than actually reporting the news.

ESPN has a major conflict of interest. The Big East should sue them for tortious interference. ESPN is intentionally trying to hurt the big east financially, and at the same time they have broadcasting rights, so they can resign the conference at a low $$$ amount.
