RE: Two Openings in the CAA
The issue is it leaves The Citadel out on an island again. Makes you wonder if maybe they take a strong look at Coastal Carolina IF Charleston leaves.

Sort of off topic but The Citadel put a whipping on App State in football last Saturday.

And they beat Georgia Southern the week before.
The reason I don't think they would take Coastal, is the SoCon is dead set on the idea of 9 football playing schools. I don't think they would take on another one. Besides, what do they have to worry about? Would the Citadel leave?

If they start making a habit of beating GaSou and Appy, they may set their sites a bit higher in the football world.

Historically The Citadel is not very good. They'll have one off years where they're really solid, then go back to being a 3-8 team. For them, the sensible thing from a budget/competitive standpoint it to leave and join up with VMI in the Big South. They won't do that, but it cuts travel costs for them. The SoCon is stupid to not expand to 12 and split into divisions. Split up a North/South and keep App/Southern from playing every year, if nothing more than to ensure that it's not a loss for one of the two teams. While that sounds silly, it all but guarantees you get atleast those two in the playoffs every year, and perhaps could get up to around 4-6 teams in, depending on how Chattanooga does.
None of that of course would probably happen, but in this day and age, who would've thought West Virginia would be in the Big XII and aTm wouldn't be playing Texas on Thanksgiving.

That IS an interesting article! There's 3 points in it that stand-out to me. My selected points are all somewhat conflicting:
1. At one point, Hull said prospective recruits viewed the school’s membership in the SoCon as a “negative” in all sports, with the exception of baseball. Hull also said the SoCon was “invisible” on the national college basketball stage because the league only had four televised games.
Comment: If we're going to remain a non-football school, why would we want to be in the SoCon? The A-Sun has a higher RPI and it gets at least 1 televised game per week.
2. “You’ll start seeing mega-conferences pretty soon and it’s all about the $24 billion worth of football money,” Johnson said. “We don’t have football, so we’ve got to find our niche.
Comment: ETSU needs football re-instated pronto. We need a slice of the $24,000,000,000 pie.
3. Current SoCon members Appalachian State and Georgia Southern have publicly expressed their interest in moving up to the Football Bowl Subdivision. /// The CAA has reportedly shown interest in adding Elon and Davidson, both current members of the SoCon.
Comment: If all 5 schools leave the SoCon, in my opinion, the logical replacements would be:
Non-football = ETSU, USC-Upstate
Football = Jacksonville, Coastal Carolina, Gardner-Webb

The CofC AD and Athletics Committee chair are not very complimentary of the Southern Conference. Rather strange, they're painting this rosy picture of CAA membership while declining to make a recommendation to the full board of trustees for a move to the CAA.
Where is ETSU in all this? If CofC turns down the CAA, is ETSU a realistic non-football alternative for the CAA? If CofC goes to the CAA, does ETSU have a shot as a non-football SoCon member? Is ETSU being proactive, reactive, or nonactive with relation to these developments?

As has been said the last nine years have made sure ETSU cannot be proactive in seeking membership in a better conference. We will have to wait to something opens up and take what we can get then.
