SDSU wants the MWC to save them a spot
Oh? RT @wilnerhotline: Source: San Diego State talking to MWC about reserving spot in revamped league in case Big East doesn't work out.

Yeah, if there is teeth to this, then SDSU better already have it in place, and pretty much already lined up to back out of BE and into MWC. You don't do anything like that and let it get out.

Not surprised, because if the AQ goes away then the calculus suddenly changes for SDSU and Boise State

RE: SDSU wants the MWC to save them a spot
That's cool. Wouldn't be losing much with them. SDSU is much more invested in their basketball than Boise, so i can see why they'd be very concerned. I don't think Boise backs out though, as the BE is clearly a competitive step up for them over the MWC, even with the recent defections. If SDSU back out, plug in Fresno and you actually have a stronger conference IMO. SDSU was only a market grab, but their football wouldn't be missed, and Fresno actually has a stronger history with Boise.

I don't think it happens, but I'm sure both SDSU and Boise have both at least had those conversations with the MWC. I'd put the odds of either ever coming back at less than 5% though.

Yep. Boise can continue to be Boise - run roughshod over conference competition, play a national OOC schedule - and not have to travel coast-to-coast to do it all......
Will be interesting to see how all this shakes out in the end.

If SDSU were to leave but not Boise, it's interesting for sure. I think you likely then see Colorado St and Air Force join the Big East- and you have a pretty good western division(with 3 western schools only in Mtn time zone). Boise, Air Force, Colorado St, SMU, Houston, Navy, and Memphis.
I wonder if one thing about this is perhaps the Big West is falling apart???

I'd imagine SDSU and Boise are on the same page. Just a hunch.

RE: SDSU wants the MWC to save them a spot
Maybe they're realizing that with the Alliance leaning towards keeping the MWC and CUSA legally separate, the odds of short-term expansion to 24 are increasing. The number of candidate schools being visited by Alliance reps certainly suggests 24 hasn't been ruled out.
I think that if the analysis now being performed concludes that 24 is the right number, the Alliance presidents would be foolish to let SDSU or BSU string them along. They should assume those two are gone for good and proceed accordingly.

Um, you can't play a national schedule if you aren't going coast-to-coast.

The majority of Boise state fans are football fans only. The majority of SDSU fans are basketball fans. Boise didn't need SDSU, they just needed someone, anyone out west to travel with, and the BE decided to go with the school who was ready, willing, and had the best market available at that point in time. If they were to want out though, i doubt Boise throws their football back under the bus if there is a suitable replacement.

Agreed. It's also worth remembering that if Boise backs out of the BE, then either the BE or SDSU can terminate SDSU's BE membership with no penalty.

The calculus would have to add a few zeros on the end of the Alliance TV contract for San Diego State to go anywhere.
The AQ is a completely different issue. The haves and have-nots are divided by television dollars.

RE: SDSU wants the MWC to save them a spot
I wonder if SDSU's possible reservations could be tied to the Big West's decision to go to an 18-game conference schedule for basketball.
SDSU and Hawaii wanted a 14-game schedule.
With their BBall going from the 5th ranked conference to the 26th ranked conference, they need all the attractive OOC games they can get.
edit - wow, I hadn't realized just how big of a bus the Aztecs have thrown their Basketball team under - http://www.realtimerpi.com/rpi_bigw_Men.html

Is there any chance that the Big East moves forward with trying to please Boise State & SDSU by adding another western school immediately?

I have to think that's at least part of it.

Like, would Memphis have accepted a football-only Big East invite if it meant sending their basketball team to the Big South?

Yep. The Big West is terrible.
They'll dominate it at first, but eventually they'll start recruiting like a Big West team.

Or....could it be that Big East football TV numbers aren't working out as well as many have assumed????
