CISPA: SOPA 2.0 ... only worse!
The MPAA and RIAA are back for round two. And this time they're hiding behind terrorism.

The bill's basics?

ISPs have to send and forward all IMs, emails, and other communications directly to the government... and give the government the ability to block any "threat" they so determine.

The EFF is against this bill. The ACLU is against this bill. Groups like the Sunlight Foundation point out that all information exchanged between the government and private entities is not subject to FOIA requests ... so you will never know what was and was not shared about you to the government. The mounting scrutiny has already produced some amendments to try and stop the mounting protests, and give you a feel for some of the horrors contained therein. Present amendments which have NOT yet been approved:

1) Require the government to only use its information for cybersecurity and states that companies don't have to participate
2) The government can't make quid-pro-quo deals, where companies only get information if they share back.
3) An annual review of information sharing by the Inspector General of the Intelligence Community. (Sounds weak and DMCA-ish)

http://www.opencongress.org/bill/112-h3523/news_blogs

Better still, the reason this one is moving so rapidly is the nod of approval was given from AT&T, Facebook, Intel, IBM, Intel, Oracle, Microsoft, and Verizon beforehand. Ready to turn over the entire contents of your Facebook account to the government, comrade??

Fourth Amendment, Schmourth Amendment.

Full disclosure: Spencer Bachus is my representative.

In my defense: I haven't voted for him the last two elections.

RE: CISPA: SOPA 2.0 ... only worse!
I have said all along that something similar to SOPA/PIPA will eventually pass, but I don't expect it happen until right after the elections. Obama is too indebted to the Hollywood crowd not to sign it, but he's also smart enough to not sign it before November.

There are a lot of respectable names on that sponsor list. I wonder what they know that we don't?

They know that a lot of big corporations support it and are willing to give campaign donations to those who vow to support it.
