Pre-crime screening coming soon
Quote:The U.S. Department of Homeland security is working on a project called FAST, the Future Attribute Screening Technology, which is some crazy straight-out-of-sci-fi pre-crime detection and prevention software which may come to an airport security screening checkpoint near you someday soon. Yet again the threat of terrorism is being used to justify the introduction of super-creepy invasions of privacy, and lead us one step closer to a turn-key totalitarian state. This may sound alarmist, but in cases like this a little alarm is warranted. FAST will remotely monitor physiological and behavioral cues, like elevated heart rate, eye movement, body temperature, facial patterns, and body language, and analyze these cues algorithmically for statistical aberrance in an attempt to identify people with nefarious intentions.

In fairness, many of us called for profiling instead of the cattle calls they do.

However, given the totalitarian nature of persons in government, and our Founding Fathers' wisdom w/ the 4th Amendment, this looks to be a problem.

RE: Pre-crime screening coming soon
If it remotely monitors somebody (unlike say a transvaginal ultrasound 03-wink) is it really that big of a deal? The machine flags somebody who then gets asked questions?

It's gotta be more reliable then pulling out every 100th person for a random screen doesn't it?

But it's likely another big waste of money and nothing more than a "hey look what we're doing to prevent terrorism" gimmick.

I still think something similar to the Israeli model would work the best.

I was thinking the same thing... This is the type of thing you expect a trained, professional, law enforcement office to do... Look at the body language for something that's not right.

Am I Happy a computer is doing it? no... Should it alone be the bases for a search? probably not... Perhaps as a way to point professional officers at people.

And by professional trained officers I clearly mean not TSA officials.

Sounds like what they're doing here is an attempt to automate the Israeli model.

I'm willing to be a year's pay that if this thing regularly detects more than the usual amounts of Muslims, gays, or any other liberal friendly group, it gets shut down.

Well, it did say it only has about a 70% accuracy rate.

Actually, for anything connected to our government, a 70% accuracy rate means it only fails 30% of the time and is therefore a smashing success. Most government programs fail more than 50% of the time.

It is not so much the tools employed as the mindset of those (statist tools) employing them that concerns me.

Sounds straight out of the "Minority Report" movie. Let's read you, try you, and execute you before you commit a crime.

lol what? 50% failure rate? Based on what definition of 'failure'?

This just sounds like baseless rhetoric to me, just like Welfare having a 20% fraud rate (more along the lines of 8% which is not far from most private insurance companies rates) and abortions being 99% of what planned parenthood does.

I'm screwed. I'm that dude that walks too fast, speaks too fast, has to be doing something with his hands constantly, can't sit still, and is looking around everywhere at once. Basically, I am a twitchy bastard. That thing will think I'm gonna do something illegal at all times.
