Not too classy, in spite of whatever positive things he accomplished this year. He didn't handle this well. Whether Miller was truly a D1 basketball player or not is irrelevant. He treated that kid like crap at the end.

+1

Cawoo knows what went down. And, to quote Dog Fan (?) I believe, "Ricardo Patton, the gift that keeps on giving!"

I guess this answers my question.

It seems we got this guy for Miller

Miller is a great kid but not a D1 player. If you saw him play SIU and DePaul, you know why he was cut.

RE: NS: MBB story - Miller vs MM
I think anyone with any knowledge of basketball hears it for what it is: a whiney exit by a disgruntled player who was in over his head....Hardly an embarrassment....and any player that takes that scholarship will contribute much more to a winning program....

to show you how misinformed coachdad might be, the two point guards he referenced are NOT transfers but both h.s. players--one SIGNED with NIU in November and the other committed last month...you think that would have told miller something--we just hired two new guys at your position. if that happened at your company, what would you think????

hopefully, monty uses that millers scholarship to get a real player...maybe a BIG player

there is on evidence he treated the kid like "crap at the end." He just needed better players...letting someone go who is a detriment to your organization's goals is not treating them like crap--it is life.

We got Baker when Deandree Bennett left, not for Miller. Niu has 1 more scholly left. Monty is the coach, which means he has to make the hard decisions. I am sure Millers family is mad, he just lost a full ride and his family must now help pay. There will not be any fall-out for Niu with Illinois highschool coaches. D1 athletics is a business not a charity!

Being cut is one thing but if it happened the way it supposedly did in the article, not too classy or smart and what's worse, could be a black mark that might affect recruiting, especially if the kid's dad is a high school coach. Lord knows, we need all the help we can get in recruiting.

The "public" outside of NIU sports fans and maybe some really hardcore MAC fans don't really care about this stuff.

This stuff happens all the time and we occationally think that we are above it then we realize that our crap stinks too.

Disagree--You don't think the high school coaches all around Chicagoland hear of this stuff and are influenced by it.

While this is a concern of mine as well, it's well known that you only show up on this board when something negative happens. You make Alum look bubbly by comparison.

Just yesterday there was something posted saying that MM is doing great in Chicago, I doubt some dad (even if he is a long time coach) and sadly not D1 material player spouting off in anger will affect that.

RE: NS: MBB story - Miller vs MM
if the NIU way was wasting a scholarship on a guy that can't play at this level then I am glad MM didn't accept that "way".....as for Compher, he wants to WIN...that is why he hired MM at a big salary so he will continue to support him and NIU in the quest to the top of the MAC....this is just a small speed bump in the race to the checkered flag

RE: NS: MBB story - Miller vs MM
It's not "wasting a scholarship," it's honoring a commitment. Evidently, Jeff Compher feels the same way: “This is a situation that coach Montgomery and I have been dealing with for the past several weeks,” Compher said in a statement Wednesday. “Our basketball staff and members of our athletics administration, myself included, have met with Zach and his parents on multiple occasions. Zach remains on scholarship at NIU, and his status as a scholarship student-athlete and a member of the basketball team going forward was secure."

Those of us that saw Zach Miller play in H.S. knew that he was going to struggle at the D-1 level. But, our previous coach (and NIU) tendered him a scholarship. While I'm a strong Monty supporter, the best course of action for him would have been to honor the commitment.

I'd like to think that the "NIU way" is the honorable way.

Trust me, i am as down on NIU basketball as anyone but i feel for MM. The players he had were not that talented and agiven the few scholies he had to work with some tough decisions had to be made. As unpopular and seemingly classless this decision was, i have to believe he did so to help the talent level on the team. All those high school coach bridges that he might have temporarily set afire with this will be long forgotten if MM starts winning. Winning cures any PR harm this may cause.

WOW
I don't know how I feel about how this went down.

Well, add in that MM went around the locker room after the last game and told Miller in front of everyone that he was an important part of the program and he wanted him back. Then, a couple of days later, had the individual meeting where he yanked the scholarship.

Not too classy, in spite of whatever positive things he accomplished this year. He didn't handle this well. Whether Miller was truly a D1 basketball player or not is irrelevant. He treated that kid like crap at the end.

What? Would you he have rather told the kid in front of his teammates he wasn't worthy? It's much better to do it in the individual meeting. Not going to embarrass him in front of his friends.. You do it in private, let the kid save face and can say he left on his own terms.

It was well known even among us casual fans, he wasn't up to the level of play, it's a shame, but the kid was a walk-on at best. The coach who gave him a scholarship got fired for a reason.
