Instead of going after established head coaches, SMU would do better going after an assistant that has strong Dallas area recruiting ties.

Doubling your salary to $2 Million isn't cracked up to what it use to be.

We sure have been giving coaches nice increases in salaries at their current schools.

I know it is hard to tell.....but how many coaches have they pursued at this point? It seems like a lot.

Like 6-7, most of them unrealistic.

What happened to Larry Brown? Brown was interested in the SMU job.

I haven't heard anything other than the report that he had interest. I wish I were a fly on the wall in that discussion within our administration.

I will not be one to tell you guys WHO you should go after, but one criteria that should be looked at IMO is Big East back ground of some sort. Maybe you guys should go after someone who has the inner knowledge of the conference, and the officials of the league than go after a high price name. Surely there is an assistant out there amongst the Big East that is ready for the move up, but who ever gets the job shouldn't have IMO a hard time finding talent there amongst Dallas.

Knowing Brown is not a long term solution or commitment, I say, "Hire Brown , let him recruit, and rebuild the program." When he walks away a few years later, the program is in better shape.

If not, grab Bruce Pearl and let him energize the program.

Agree about Brown. I think Bruce Pearl has a show cause attached.

Marquette assistant Tony Benford is a logical choice, he is one of the top assistants in college basketball and has ties to Texas (played at Tech) and experience in the Big East. I guess they were going for an established head coach for their first few years in the Big East, cannot blame them...the league is brutal, especially for a young coach.

Believe SMU, with their $2 Million plus annual salary pool, wants an experienced Head Coach...(i.e. no need to offer even an up-and-coming top asst $600,000 to $800,000 when $2 Million plus is available).

SMU probably made the mistake stating how much cash they will have on hand for a new coach...because, the best hire just might be a top asst head coach looking to take the bull by the horns (i.e. maybe even be more aggressive OFF the court, help fire up the alumni and Dallas area folks to purchase season tix...something SMU desperately needs, etc...)

No clue what SMU will do now...and with national signing day already gone (most unsigned players from last Nov signed on Wed), probably no rush now to make a panic hire (i.e. SMU wanted to have a coach signed by Nationals Signing Day and possible grab a recruit or two from their current school who had only verbaled)..just take your time and hopefully get it right

Doesn't look like experienced coach wants the job...

Doesn't look like experienced coach wants the job...

That probably says more about SMU's program than it does others...when coaches turn down offers to DOUBLE their salary and have extra benefits like charter flights to road games and private planes for recruiting (which Majerus doesn't have) and they STILL turn down said job.

Orsini might have to find a younger head coach with experience...but even those agents of those coaches will want the same $2 Million annually that SMU offered to others.

Looks like SMU will finally get around to talking to Johnny Jones, but will he choose SMU over LSU (his alma mater) if he gets the offer from Baton Rouge? I wouldn't think so, but then again, who knows what these coaches are thinking these days.

For those who really want to know what is going on, our Rivals site is doing a good job covering it and is offering a 30 day free trial...just remember to cancel before 30 days if you don't want to be charged.

This is a good move. If he chooses LSU, so be it. At the very least it shows you're looking at coaches that are highly sought. He's a very good young coach that likely has that chip on the shoulder. That's what SMU needs.

Coaches are saying our academic restrictions are the main reason they are turning down the job. The restrictions are setting them up to fail.

I highly doubt it.

SMU's academic restrictions are no tougher then the majority of the Big East. In fact, your own IR page on SMU.edu confirms this (avg. GPA, SAT, and ACT of athletes). There's a post on Pony Fans which shows the the requirements are dead-even with your neighbors to the West and even more lenient than the boys to the South: Baylor.
