California universities failing b/c of leftist indoctrination
Not a new insight for me. But the evidence is mounting.

Quote:How California's Colleges Indoctrinate Students
A new report on the UC system documents the plague of politicized classrooms. The problem is national in scope..
By PETER BERKOWITZ
The politicization of higher education by activist professors and compliant university administrators deprives students of the opportunity to acquire knowledge and refine their minds. It also erodes the nation's civic cohesion and its ability to preserve the institutions that undergird democracy in America.
So argues "A Crisis of Competence: The Corrupting Effect of Political Activism in the University of California," a new report by the California Association of Scholars, a division of the National Association of Scholars (NAS). The report is addressed to the Regents of the University of California, which has ultimate responsibility for governing the UC system, but the pathologies it diagnoses prevail throughout the country.
The analysis begins from a nonpolitical fact: Numerous studies of both the UC system and of higher education nationwide demonstrate that students who graduate from college are increasingly ignorant of history and literature. They are unfamiliar with the principles of American constitutional government. And they are bereft of the skills necessary to comprehend serious books and effectively marshal evidence and argument in written work.
Yeah max, you don't even know what you don't know.

RE: California universities failing b/c of leftist indoctrination
I agree with the report, but it should be admitted that neither the author nor the NAS is an unbiased source.
The simple truth is that the Left's take-over of the UC system (and the CSU system, too) is so complete and so comprehensive that anybody who attempts to join it (as a student, faculty member, or administrator) should be deemed to have notice that they are entering a "conservatives-not-welcome" zone. A small handful of missionary-type conservatives will choose to endure that experience. But most should -- and will -- simply stay away.

The UC system as a whole is the best in the nation. No other state can claim the number of quality universities that the UC system has - UC Berkeley, UC Davis, UCLA, UC Riverside, UC Irvine, and UC SF are all top-tier universities. UC Santa Cruz, UC Santa Barbara, UC San Diego, and UC Merced are all good schools.

In science and medicine. In other fields they are failing. The liberals in these places, just like everywhere, are leaching off of the few who produce.

Torch,
How would you describe the partisanship at BGSU?

All liveral indoctrination factories. i lived not far from UC Riverside and knew/worked with a lot of people who went there. While more moderate than UC Berkeley and UCLA, they still got a heavy dose of liberalism.

Torch,

It's been 24 years since I was there, and then for only 1.5 years. At the time, and what I saw later in grad school at ASU, was that science profs kept their political/religious/controversial opinions to themselves. They didn't want the headaches of dealing with unresolved debates, or worse, harassment charges.
But humanities professors (and TAs) were more brazen.

UCSB has had 5 fairly recent Nobel Laureates and effectively recruited one of the premier photonics engineers (Nakamura).
Joke all you want, but they're doing something right there.

All of the UCs are academically rigorous and competitive. Doesn't stop UCSB from being a party school of the highest order. In fact, makes it all the more notable.

I have no illusions to the University's ability to teach vs. my inability to pay attention and escape the siren's call, especially at a school in Southern California. It was more a description of my own potential failing, than a description of the school being a joke....

The problem with the UC schools and to some extent, the CSU schools is that they are becoming too expensive for those that can't get financial aid and are not in the upper class.
