I saw where Ohio was trying to raise $ attempting to keep him.

I posted elsewhere the MAC has to get much smarter about these contracts.

The FIRST thing is to prospectively make sure the contract is fair and forward looking. A coach who wins in the NCAAs has to be rewarded under this 'old' (current) contract.

E.g., I'd suggest each contract have bonuses tied to the NCAAs, NIT, etc.

I'd suggest: $25K for making the NCAAs, another 50K for each win in the first two rounds, 100K for a win in the Sweet 16 round, etc. (obviously these dollar amount are subject to negotiation).

Or 10K for making the NIT and 15 - 20K for each NIT win.

The idea being is that a Groce could have made his base salary and then a BIG bonus (e.g., 125K in my example).

Schools like Ohio end up playing 'catch up' once the team surprises in the NCAAs.

What is happening too is that salaries are escalating at such a rapid pace the MAC is struggling to keep up with.

Schools that want to get serious about the hoops game are dangling 2 million dollar packages for takers. Missouri Valley schools are usually in the 750k to 1 million ballpark.

The MAC was offering 250k when the BCS conferences were outside of a few bigs offering only 1 million per year. Now MAC schools are offering 350k when the offers are going on in the 2 to 3 million dollar range.......to just be treading water the MAC would have to get into the 600-700k range.

It took 1.4 million per year for 5 years to get Groce to leave Ohio. 7 million dollars is some serious cash. What happens in 5 years. Is he still at Illinois or does he find his next once in a lifetime job at 4 million per year at Indiana or Ohio State.

I could see Groce if he can do at least a fair job in Illinois taking the reigns in Louisville for the 4 million dollars per season.

Groce is getting Shaka/Stevens level money to coach at Illinois. They low balled him with 1.4 million.
