Coach Larry Brown to SMU?!?
If this is true, SMU should pull the trigger NOW. I know he is 71 but he would have us ready in 2 years. Pay some great Assistants for recruiting, and leave the HC position much more appealing for the next hire. DO IT.

http://collegesportsblog.dallasnews.com/...k-int.html

"Hall of Fame coach Larry Brown has expressed interest in the open SMU men's basketball coaching job, according to sources.

It's unclear if the feeling is mutual as Brown is 71 and last coached the Charlotte Bobcats in 2010................"

Thoughts?

It will be a good hire only, if the kids still relate to him. Good luck. 04-cheers

As far as short term hires go, it would be a good one. The man has won at every level.

RE: Coach Larry Brown to SMU?!?
Why not....he's been everywhere else.

Let's play a game....without looking it up.....where has Larry Brown coached.

Obviously as mentioned.....his last stop was the Charlotte Bobcats.

I mostly remember him as the 76ers coach.

Now who are the others?

Hint: (I looked it up because there would be no way I could remember all of these) He coached at 2 colleges, 1 ABA team and NINE NBA teams.

We can debate the "too old" thing all we want. But Larry Brown would be a HUGE hire for SMU 04-cheers
Especially considering that I've seen Seth Greenberg tweets here and there 03-lmfao

Wasn't he the HC for the Pistons when the pacer fight broke out? Think Detroit won the championship that year too.

I like it! He's a genius. You could do worse than have Brown put his fingerprints on the evolution of the SMU program. And, I'm sure he'll surround himself with young, capable, assistants (one of which will be your unofficial HCIW)...

Denver Rockets (ABA) and/or Nuggets (NBA).
Back when I was a kid and I guess he was the age I am now.
I'd go watch him coach a game again for sure.

Good one.

You might be the only one to remember the other ABA team prior to Denver. I am too young to remember.

My 1st memory of Larry Brown was at Kansas.

RE: Coach Larry Brown to SMU?!?
The best coaching job he ever did (in my opinion) was when he was head coach of the LA Clippers and he took them to their first playoff in a very long time.

Phil Jackson may be a great coach, or he may just be a guy who has always been in the right place in the right time. But Larry Brown took the effin' Clippers to the playoffs. That, my friends, is GREAT coaching.

The only problem with Larry Brown, is he was notorious for not liking to play rookies the last 15-20 years. IF he can't stand NBA rookies, what the hell will he think of college players?

This seems waaaay more likely. Unless there's some personal connection where he wants/needs to spend a lot of time in Dallas, SMU makes no sense at all to me for him. He can easily get another NBA job if he wanted to and if he really wanted a college job, there are power schools that would love him if he's truly available. Take it from someone whose school that has been dealing with a high profile and still fruitless coaching search for the past several weeks: someone "expressing interest" in a job means absolutely nothing. I can't tell you how much I've seen otherwise reliable reporters use that phrase lately and it has all turned out to be B.S.

SMU's throwing a LOT of $$$ around...

Illinois has just offered two different coaches to become one of the top 10 highest paid coaches in the country (neither of whom has anywhere close to the accomplishments of Larry Brown) and got flat out turned down. Money isn't everything, and even if it was, Larry Brown can get paid much more in the NBA. I've seen so many "this guy has expressed interest in this job" stories from otherwise reliable people over the past few weeks that have turned out to be B.S. that seeing that in print means nothing to me anymore.

Just use the smell test. There is nothing in Larry Brown's coaching history that indicates that this is anything more than him getting his name out there so that the aloof Knicks management can be tricked into thinking that he needs to be paid more to come out of retirement. His only two college jobs in the past 4 decades were with UCLA and Kansas! I'm trying to be nice here, but let's just say that doesn't sound like someone that's aiming to take over SMU basketball at this stage of his life from a professional standpoint. There's only one reason why he'd consider it: there's something/someone in his personal life that is causing him to want to live in Dallas year-round. That's it.

That's probably the last place Brown would end up at again.

Knicks settled a lawsuit with Brown for $18.5 Million when they fired him "with cause" some 6 years ago...which is why the Knicks didn't pay the $40 Million that was still left on his contract at the time.

Knicks have made way toooo many dumb moves over the past 30 plus years...but doubt they would make a bigger one bringing back Brown for one more run.
