DETROIT - Following an intense search for two women from Hamtramck, the bodies of two women have been found in a shallow grave in Detroit. Police believe they may be Abreeya Brown and Ashley Conaway.
"On the surface, they fit the description of the two missing ladies. ... The families have been notified," Chief Ralph Godbee told reporters at the scene. "We're going to be out here a long time."
Abreeya Brown, 18, was abducted at gunpoint in late February along with her best friend and housemate, 22-year-old Ashley Conaway, right in front of their home on Andrus in Hamtramck. They had just returned from a restaurant when two men came after them. One of them was allegedly Conaway's ex-boyfriend, 26-year-old Brandon Cain.
Relatives said one of the women was able to send text messages for a short time from inside the trunk, but the women had not been heard from since then.
No one has been charged in the disappearance and deaths of Brown and Conaway.
Cain and 24-year-old Brian Lee were charged earlier this month with attempted murder for a shooting Feb. 8 that involved Brown and Conaway. Relatives previously said Conaway had tried to end a relationship with a boyfriend several weeks earlier. They also told police that the boyfriend became angry and fired shots at the women.
Cain and Lee are in custody and have not been formally accused in the women's disappearance. Lee was scheduled for a preliminary examination in district court Monday, but a prosecutor expected it to be pushed back until Friday so both men can face the judge together.
FOX 2's Al Allen reports the search for evidence continued Monday morning. "For the family's sake, we can bring closure for those families," said Godbee.
"She didn't deserve this and I hope that justice is done for her and Ashley," said Jacquelyn Porter, aunt to Abreeya Brown.
