Ohio's NCAA rise chronicled
Ohio in the tourney:

2005:
#4 Florida (67) #13 Ohio (62) (Solid)

2010:
#14 Ohio (97) #3 Georgetown (83) (Wow!)
#6 Tennessee (83) #14 Ohio (68)

2012:
#13 Ohio (65) #4 Michigan (60)
#13 Ohio (62) #12 South Florida (56)
#1 North Carolina (73) #13 Ohio (65) OT (Holy Crap)

-Ohio gave Florida in 2005 all it could handle in the first round. That was the first guard oriented team in the program after decades of front court style teams. Aside from Miami taking Oregon to the wire in 2007, every other MAC participant since 2005 aside from Ohio has lost by double digits.

Kent State (2006 and 2008), Akron (2009 and 2010) lost both NCAA appearances by double digits making Ohio's effort against Florida coming back from 20 down all the more impressive.

-Ohio's upset of Georgetown was the MAC's first win in the NCAA tournament since 2002 and only the 5th time since the NCAA tourney expanded in 1985 the MAC even won a game; Ball State (1990), EMU (1991), Miami (1999), Kent State (2002). Hanging 97 points in the first round against a #3 seed was astonishing.

-Ohio's 2012 run taking #1 seed North Carolina to OT after trailing 15 in the first half was closest to equaling Kent State's elite 8 team in 2002. Against a type of opponent that MAC schools normally lose by 30 points to, Ohio down 15 early, down 7 in the half was able to take the lead 57-53 with 3 minutes to go!

Up to the 3 minute mark Ohio outscored Carolina 34-24 in the second half of an NCAA regional game. #1 seed Carolina escaped with their lives last night. This wasn't a mid major team riding a hot start, Ohio played terrible the first 15 minutes of the game and was on the verge of being buried by 30-40 points....Yet as the game ticked down to the final minutes Ohio was on top!

Central beat Creighton in 2003.

Yes. Ohio U did a nice job this season.

The MAC has underperformed in the tourney for a long while now.

Ohio U in the sweet 16 was way overdue for the MAC.

I was taking my data from Wiki. I thought I remembered CMU making it to the round of 32 but I didn't see it listed.

Quote:ST. LOUIS, Mo. - Ohio's Walter Offutt was named to the NCAA Midwest Regional All-Tournament Team. The junior guard scored a game and career-high 26 points in the Bobcats' contest against top-seeded North Carolina Friday night at the Edward Jones Dome.

Offutt (Indianapolis, Ind.) was one of three players that finished in double figures with 18 of his 26 coming from beyond the arc. His six 3-pointers were a career high on 10 attempts.

He averaged 16 points per game while shooting 69 percent from the field in NCAA Tournament victories over Michigan and South Florida. In the 2012 postseason, a six-game span, Offutt averaged 13.8 points while shooting 53 percent from the field and 50 percent from beyond the arc.

Offutt was MAC Player of the Week after scoring a then-career high 23 points in a win at Buffalo. He finished among the top 10 in the MAC in steals and top 15 in scoring.

The Bobcats recently concluded their best season in school history with a school record 29 wins. The Bobcats went to a postseason tournament for the third year in a row for the first time in program history and advanced to the Sweet 16 for the first time since the bracket expanded to its current format.

Kent also beat Indiana one year
and EMU knocked off Duke
Ball State got to the sweet 16 one year, but also beat Pitt another year

That's just off the top of my head. More than five wins.

Edit: Also remembered Miami's win over Arizona in '95 or so.

Though I guess it's a good source if your thesis is, "Ohio's Sweet 16 Run Invented MAC Hoops!"
