Probably stings b/c it's true. Otherwise fun article. But he misses a bigger point, Ohio is one of the most contentious states around. Everybody there likes to argue.

Quote:Then there is Ohio University, which as a member of the Mid-American Conference is the decided small-budget Cinderella now butting its head into the big-boy battle royal.

The Bobcats would be pretty excited if anyone cared enough about them to start a rivalry.

Yeah, this is the time where Ohio embarrasses the big time programs, so he’s just trying to get in front of it.

RE: Wetzel disses the MAC
Isn't he just talking about lack of rivalry between Ohio and the remaining teams in the Sweet 16, especially compared to the rivalries between the other S16 members in the Ohio-Kentucky-Indiana region? I don't think he's trying to make any sort of statement about the MAC and its internal rivalries.

Wetzel is the author of "Death to the BCS" and a UMass guy, for what it's worth.

Ohio-Akron, Ohio-Kent State, Ohio-Miami are pretty good in state rivalries. Its a war every nite in the MAC East. Akron and Buffalo looked better than Michigan inside. Imagine how bad Buffalo's frontline would have whipped Michigan on the glass.

RE: Wetzel disses the MAC
I took it the same way LastMinuteman took it. Just seems like he meant that the other schools talked about dont consider Ohio as a rival as they do with each other. The others have history amongst themselves and Ohio just happens to be near them.

"If anyone cared enough about them..." That's a dis, not just a historical account.

Not that Wetzel is a big program cheerleader, but he would have said this about anyone in the conference. Maybe that will generate some heat for the MAC to go forward.

RE: Wetzel disses the MAC
I put Wetzel's comment at a "2" out of "10" on the Dissing Scale. Charles Barkley's comments are about a "6.5"; Detroit writers usually around a "7" or an "8". Clearly a "10" is Lansing's Tim Staudt. He is the bar from which all other MAC dissers should be measured.

Obviously, you never saw the real "SINderella" story! And, they're not step-sisters! They're "kneel-sisters!"

I took that to mean "if any one of the teams in this geographic region in the Sweet 16 I'm talking about right now cared enough about Ohio...". For example, if Kentucky cared enough about UMass to consider us a rival, yeah, I'd be pretty excited about that. Wetzel did go on to discuss the undercurrent of resentment between Ohio and Ohio State. Finding links between the surviving teams in the NCAA tourney was the point of the article.
