Some time late Thursday night Cincinnati and Ohio State will square off with a spot in the Elite 8 on the line in a game only the NCAA can seem to manufacture once every half century.
Well, 50 years ago the managed to put the teams on a collision course twice in a row and, well, the two National Championship banners hanging in 5/3 Arena tell the story of how that played out.
I'm sure this is where loud mouth, arrogant Buckeye fan reminds me of the meeting in 2006 that Thad Matta claimed on Wednesday was a case of TV manufacturing the game. “In terms of why we haven't- we played them a few years ago in Indianapolis, which was a CBS type game that they'd asked us to play.”
Ah yes. The game that CBS asked the Buckeyes to play, and Ohio State conveniently agreed to two weeks after Bob Huggins was forced out the door leaving the UC program in a mess that took over half a decade to crawl out of.
Clearly a kind gesture by the school up I 71 to give way to the wants and needs of CBS to put a crippled UC program on a national stage with Connor Barwin, Ron Allen and Ced McGowan manning the post against the uncle of Robert Parish. Sorry I mean Greg Oden.
The funny thing is, if it weren't for that one game that Ohio State used to show UC who was “boss”, I really wouldn't care that they ducked UC in the 50 years since the Bearcats claimed two championships against OSU.
